Thomas L. Dixon, Telegrapher,
Killed in Terminal Yard$. -
BODY . IS CUT IN HALVES
Mystery Surrounds Tragedy of
Which Coroner Finds No Eye
witnesses Victim Is but
IB Tears of Age.
Thomas L. XHxon, 19 years old, em
ployed as a telegraph operator by the
Western Union Telegraph Company, was
run over and Instantly killed by a freight
train in the terminal yards at about 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon. How the
accident occurred is not known, for no
witnesses to the tragedy could be lo
cated by Coroner Flnley when he Investi
gated the matter.
A. man named Green was walking along
the tracks through the terminal yards
shortly after 4 o'clock and came upon the
body of young Dixon lying across the
rails and cut in two. He rushed to a tele
phone and notified the Coroner. When
Mr. Flnley reached the terminal yards he
found the body just as it lay when dis
covered by Green. It was removed to the
morgue.
The Coroner then inquired among the
train crews and switching gangs at work
in the yards. But nobody could be found
who could shed any light on the acci
dent. It is presumed the young
man attempted to cross the tracks in
front of freight cars which were being
shifted and was knocked down and killed
without the knowledge of the switching
crew.
Ilxon resided with relatives at 61 Park
, treet North, and was highly respected by
all who knew him. He had been in the
habit of visiting his elder brother each
afternoon after his work was done and
In doing so passed through the terminal
grounds to reach the Southern Pacltic
freight sheds, where the brother, Frank
R. Dixon, is employed as clerk. The'
younger Dixon was relieved from duty at
the telegraph office at 3 o'clock yesterday
afternoon.
Chief Operator Wingate and Assistant
Chief Routledge, of the Western Union
Telegraph Company, speak very highly
of Dixon, who started to work for the
company about Ave years ago as a check
boy. By faithful attention to his duties
he worked up to the position of an ope
rator. No arrangements have been made
for the funeral.
