BOOST ICE PRICES
Fortland Manufacturers Form
Distributing Agency.
SAY IT IS NOT A TRUST
Hut It W ill Cost 40 Per Cent More
to Koop Cool This Summer The'
Iflpher Cost or Production Is
I lie Kxouse for the liaise.
Portland ptoplc may keep cool this
siimmor. but it - will be an expensive
luxury. The ice they xi?e .will cost them
just i per crnt more than it did last
year. The reason for all this is the
formation of an ice combine, which has
tixed prices for which its product will be
sold. Housekeepers who last year paid
00 cents a hundred pounds for ice will
this year be required to pay TO cents,
while the price to saloon and restaurant
men and other large consumers will be
40. cents a hundred, instead of 35, as last
Summer. The new- rates go Into effect
thts morning.
This advance in the price of Ice may
be traced to an arrangement that has
been effected by the three Ice-producing
plants of this citywlth the Ice Delivery
Company. The companies Interested ace
.tbe Crystal Ice & Storage Company,
Portland Artificial Ice Company and the
Independent Coal & Ice Company.
'The ice manufacturers of Portland
have- not formed a trust," said O. M.
Rankin, . manager of the Independent
Coal & Ice Company, yesterday. "We
have merely established a collecting and
distributing agency for the more econom
ical delivery" of ice throughout the city.
It costs more to manufacture ice now
than it once did, and delivery has become
one of the principal expenses. Instead of
each company maintaining its own de
livery system, the ice from all three
plants will now be distributed through
this Ice Delivery Company. The slight
advance in prices has nothing to do with
this arrangement. The rates last Sum
mer were decidedly low, and the prices
we have announced for the coming sea
son are no higher than have been paid
in Portland in former years. They are
justified by the increase in the cost of
mann f acturing."
The combined output of the three ice
plants in this city is 175 tons daily. The
supply is entirely adequate for the needs
of the city, and last year dealers ship
ped 40 tons daily to relieve the Ice fam
ine at Seattle. There is no danger of
any shortage in the supply this season,
allowing for large shipments to outside
points, since the plants now have on
hand storage reservations." which have
accumulated during the Winter months,
amounting to more than 10.000 tons. Dur
ing the Winter the uniform price of 23
cents a hundred was maintained for ail
consumers. Thp consumption of ice in
the Winter in this city does not exceed
40 tons a day for all purposes.

CLAIMS II NEGRO'S ESTATE
WHITE WOMAN SUES ADMINIS
TRATOR OF BEX PRATT.
Says She Was Engaged to Hotel Por
ter and Allowed Hlin to Bank
Her Savings.
A bitter contest is on between Ben
Pratt, father of the late Ben Pratt, Jr..
colored, and Btta Montgomery, a white
woman, who declares that for five years
she was encased to marry the younger
Pratt, who was employed as a porter at
the Hotel Portland until his death, Jan
uary 26. She says they were to have
been married in February. In a complaint
filed in the County Court she sets forth
that she is entitled to J1500 out of- about
4C00.. on deposit in local banks in the
name of the dead man. She swears that
for five years whe save all her savings
to him. She also says she thought he
was banking the money in her name.
Five lawyers are . encaged' in the con
test, which comes up next Saturday
morning before County Judge Webster.
Kdward V. Rutherford is administrator
of the estate. He Is represented by At
torney McCants Stewart. The father, Ben
Pratt, who lives at Sumpter. S. C, was
originally represented by ex-United States
Senator John M. Gearin. but now he is
also represented by W A. Andrews,
colored, a lawyer of his home town. The
latter reached Portland Monday night
and is engaged in looking into the case,
preparatory to the hearing Saturday.
Miss Montgomery Is represented by Mc
Mahon & McDevitt.
Lawyer Stewart says that Miss Mont
gomery Is entitled to her money, and
says he believes she tells nothing but the
truth.
Ben Pratt was a popular porter at the
Hotel Portland. He worked there for
many years and was a favorite of all the
older patrons of the house. His death
was so sudden that it caused a per
sistent rumor of foul play, which was
thoroughly investigated by the police.
It was determined by an autopsy that he
died from acute alcoholism. While the
case was in the hands of the authorities.
Miss Montgomery was taken to police
headquarters, where she was subjected
to a searching cross-examination by de
tectives. Miss Montgomery declared at the time
that she had been engaged to marry
Pratt. It was the fact that she was In
his room when he died that caused sus
picion to attach to her at first. She was
astonished, she swears, to ascertain,
upon investigation, that Pratt had de
posited her savings in his own name, and
that her only recourse was to make her
claim through the County Court.
ART TREASURES ON SHOW
Splendid Exhibit of Paintings, An
tiques and Jewels.
BY NANCY LEE.
A distinct epoch in the history of
Portland's movement toward a better
appreciation of art and its related in
terests is marked by the Arts and
Crafts exhibit which opened at the
Museum of Art yesterday. The in
terest that is manifested in the affairs
is most reassuring to those who have
devoted their efforts to it. Yesterday's
attendance wars large and representa
tive and the showing of 'antiques and
art treasures was such, that those who
attended were amazed and delighted
that so creditable an exhibit could be
arranged in so brief a time and with
so little furore. Few cities in the coun
try could boast a finer showing, and
every Portlander should feel gratified.
The exhibit will continue for several
days and It is hoped by those who have
been active in arranging It that as
many as possible will take advantage
of this opportunity to study the vari
ous branches of arts and crafts rep
resented. It is eminently an educa
tional event which should prove of
lasting benefit to the community and
contribute toward elevating the stand
ard of the city's culture. Through
the efforts of Mrs. Hugh Hume an ex
hibition of painting by American ar
tists Is also on display. Mrs. Hume is
a sister of George de Forrest Brush,
who has but one picture on exhibition,
but characteristic of his work, it is
marked by refinement and distinction
of drawing. He has termed It "Cross
ing the Plains," and it is artistically
atmospheric, the sky being of an un
usually deep azure that lends a strik
ing background for the majestically
silent figure of the Indian chief.
The exhibition is to be thrown open
for a fornight and will be of special
interest to all lovers of the picturesque.
Apropos of art. two artists of note,
who are at present visiting here, are
Miss Lillie V. O'Ryan, the originator
of the Janice Merldlth, and Putnam the
sculptor. - .
Kellaher Rally in Alisky Hall.
A rally for Dan Kellaher, candidate for
the Republican nomination for Mayor,
was held at Alisky hall last night, and
proved an enthusiastic' affair. Jay Upton
presided. The meeting was largely at
tended by retail and wholesale merchants
as well as by friends of the candidate.
Mr. Kellaher made a short address. Re
ports were heard from each precinct In
the city, and they were all encouraging.
The Kellahei forces have a strong or
ganization, and have representatives at
work in every precinct. ' Plans were laid
for getting more active workers in the
