FAVORS 11 FOR COUNCIL
MCMCIPATj association in
dorses HOLMAN AND BRICE.
Kxccntivo Committee la Considering
Names of Other Candidates.
May Give Support to Lane.
At an executive meeting of the Mu
nicipal Association held yesterday after
noon In the Commercial building, Rufua
Holmin, candidate for Councilman for
the Fourth Ward, and George F. Brice,
candidate for Councilman for the Eighth
Ward, were Indorsed. A number of other
candidates were discussed by the mem
bers of the executive committee of the
association, but no other Indorsements
were made. A committee, consisting of
Dr. J. U Hewitt. Miller Murdock and
O. P. Jameson, with Mr. Jameson as
chairman, was appointed to Investigate
the other candidates that were up for
the association indorsement, and this
committee will make its report on Fri
day. No candidate for Mayor was indorsed
by the committee, altnough the question
was discussed during the meeting. A
number of the members are heartily in
favor of Mayor Lane, but whether the
Municipal Association win Indorse him
depends upon the action taken by the
committee appointed for the purpose of
considering candidate. This committee
will act before Friday. Mr. Holman was
the only candidate that had sought the
indorsement of the association who ap
peared at yesterday's meeting, and Sam
uel Connell. chairman of the executive
committee, aald last night that Holman
made a very good Impression, The names
of the other candidates who are seeking
aid at the hands of the association were
not given, but It is believed that they
will receive favorable answers from the
association.
In addition to discussing the candidates
that are to be indorsed, the $1000 license
ordinance came up for consideration. It
was the opinion of those present that
the names were signed to the petition in
good faith. It was decided by the com
mittee to wait until the new registration
should be properly Indexed and arranged
alphabetically. Then the rejected names
will be compared with the card index,
and it Is the-oplnton of the members of
the executive committee that many of
them will be found to be regular. The
committee expects that a number of the
signers will not register, and they will
have no objection to such names being
thrown out.
Thomas W ill Address Club.
There will be a meeting of the Demo
cratic host tonight In the offices of John

Gets Witness at the
Eleventh Hour
William W. Crawford Kinds Ae
r ejnalatamce Just la Time to Carry
oat NnptUIs as Planned. '
WILUAM W. CRAWFORD wanted
to get married last night, and go
with his bride to Los Angeles this morn
ing. The chief obstacle in his path was
the fact that up to 6 o'clock he had not
secured a witness who would sign the
necessary papers and swear that Craw
ford and his bride might take the step
without any lawful .impediment.
"Well, to show you my heart la in the
right place." said County Clerk Fields,
just as the young man was about to
give up in despair, 'you try again, and
if you can find anybody, telephone n
and I will come down tonight and fix you
up."
Crawford hurried out of the office, and
about 8 o'clock Mr. Fields was called
to the phone and notified that every
thing was ready. Be hastened to the
office and found Crawford grinning from
ear to ear, and a witness by his side.
"As this fellow used to go with my
prospective bride's sister, and has had
several fights with me. he knows us
pretty well," explained the would-be
bridegroom, as he carefully folded the
precious marriage document In his pocket
and rushed out. followed by his companion.

originated in a grill at 640 Van Ness street,
at 2:45 this morning, destroyed Ave frame

incendiary origin.
TO KEEP SPIES FROM FORT
Detectives Will Guard Hampton
Roads Daring Exposition.
NEW TORK, April IS. The War De
partment, according to the Times today,
following out a recommendation of
General Frederick D. Grant, has author
ized George F. Harrison, of the Artil
lery Corps, the commanding officer of
Fort Monroe. Vs., to employ during the
existence of the- Jamestown Exposition
ten private detectives, whose duty it
shall be to see that no unauthorized
persons get within the new fortifications
guarding the entrance to Hampton
Roads. Fort Monroe Is not far from
Jamestown and the site of the exposi
tion. These detectives will be put on guard
because of the great number of foreign
ers who will visit Norfolk and vicinity
in the six months the exposition will
be open.
As perhaps a large number of these
visitors will be military and naval men,
who would naturally have some curios
ity to know the strength of the fortifi
cations guarding Hampton Roads, which
is one of the four most important coast
artillery posts in this country. General
Grant regards it as a wise precaution
to guard against any of the plans be
coming known to ant visitors. Thlfl
recommendation that detectives be em
ployed was at once acted on by the War
Department.
