THJS MOKMKG OKKlrOJNlAN. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 190T. IT TTUD11 Heavy Supplies Cause Another Drop in Local Market. PRICES WEAK AT CLOSE AH Grades of Sugar Advance 20 Cents Per Hundred Flour Prices Will Be Higher Today. The butter market la rapidly seeking tta proper level. The city creameries put out quo tations yesterday morning of 27 cents, which was a decline of 2H cents a pound for most of them and an even drop of 6 cents for .those which maintained the top figure at the opening of the week. On Front street the general quotation during the day was 27 cents, though some butter was offered there at 25 cents. Stocks are rapidly accumulating; all around and a further decline la Inevitable. In some quarters it ta thought that the market will drop to 20 cents, which was the bottom last year, before the decline Is checked, but other authorities In the trade do not look for such extreme low prices. In view of the exceed ingly heavy demand and the fact that all other commodity prices are on a high basis. The Eastern butter market continues firm yet, as the season there la later than on the Coast. The Chicago quotation yesterday stood at 29 cents. The San Francisco market was weak at 21 cents and supplies were freely offered to the trade here, but of course with out finding takers. SUGAR IS TWENTY CENTS HIGHER. Local Market Promptly Follows Advance) by Sprockets Refinery. Portland wholesale grocers put up their sugar prices 20 cents per hundred yesterday morning. The rise has been expected every day since the California & Hawaiian Com pany advanced its list this amount last week. The Western Refinery waited until yesterday to change Its quotations, and on receipt of the news the local Jobbers at once notified their customers of the new prices. The slowness of the Spreckels company in following the lead of the other retlnery did not Indicate that It contemplated making any fight, but it merely held hack until it was ready to put the new prices Into effect. The condition of the raw sugar market In the East on Monday and Tuesday Justified the advance and the change was accordingly made. LOCAL FLOUR PRICES ADVANCE. New List Mill Go Into Effect This Morning. A new price list has been issued by the Portland Flouring Mills Company, quoting an advance of IS cents per barrel in all grades of flour, effective this morning. In the new list, patents are quoted at $4.80, straights and clears at S3. 75 and valley grades at $3.80 and $3.90. The retail price of the company's leading hard wheat brand will be $1.30 per sack, Instead of $1.20 as It has been. No change is made In the prices of graham and wholewheat flours. This advance in flour prices has been ex pected for some time past and is due to the steady rise that has taken place in the wheat market. ETxport grades of flour are alio very firm and the market has an up ward tendency. Eggs Coming; In More Freely. Bgg receipts are steadily increasing and the market displays a weaker tone. Trading was on a small scale and no business above or under 10 cents was reported. Specula tors are looking forward to a decline that will enable them to resume storage opera tions. Arrivals of chickens were heavier than usual yesterday, but the demand was strong enough to clear up all the offerings at un changed prices. Oranges In Strong Demand. Among yesterday's fresh produce arrivals wete two cars of oranges, one of navels and the other of Mediterranean sweets. St. Mich aels and seedlings. The demand was so good that the latter sold equally as well as the navels, as what the trade wanted most ly was sixes. Vegetables were In sufficient supply and the demand was good. Peas were more plentiful than usual. Bank Clewing. Bank clearings of the leading cities of the Northwest yesterday were: Clearinps. Balances. STOCKS NEARLY STAGNflST DOWNWARD TKNDEXCY OF LAST FEW DAYS IS CHECKED. Coppers Aided by the Sharp Advance in That Metal in the Lon- don Market. NEW YORK, April 16. The conspicuous feature of the stock market today was the extreme dullness Into which it fell. The down ward tendency of the last few days was checked and some recovery ensued. The con sequence, however, was a condition bordering on stagnation. The demand which put up prices was attributed largely to the account of the bear operators, who have been attack ing the market recently. That their buying received very small accession from outside sources is sufficiently attested to by the small aggregate sales of the day. A large propor tion of the meager total was dons In the last hour of the session, whAx the rush to cover by shorts gained considerable animation, mak ing a buoyant closing. There was slight reflection of any outside event In the movements of prices. The cop per stocks held the advantage of a sharp re bound from recent depreaalon In metal In the London market and these ahares. If American Smelting be Included, were conspicuous in the day's upward movement in prices. The cop pers kept the same stocks in their company that have been conspicuous in all the late speculation. The Harrlmans. the Hills and Reading made up the preponderance of the dealings. United States Steel also was dealt in in the customary proportion to its huge share bulk. The reaction late In the day gave the usual indication of a highly professional market. Money on call continued easy, in spite of some further large syndicate transactions. In cluding a $30,000,000 payment on American Telephone convertible bonds and a $5,000,000 payment on General Electric new stock today. The effect upon the loan account of the banks, on top of last week's record increase In loans. Is a subject of interest and conjecture. Sub treasury operations continue to yield liberal amounts to the banks, the gains on that ac count having reached over $3,000,000 since the last bank statement, with another large debit by the Government institution at the clearing house today. Special Interest attached to the announcement from London of the withdrawal of $1,000,000 in gold from the Bank of Eng land for shipment to Paris. Sterling exchange at Paris also continued to decline. London financial opinion has held strongly that further substantial additions to the Bank of England's bullion holdings were essential in spite of the marked relaxation In the London market. Any Intimation of a possible demand for gold has been met by protests In London for a long time past. What the response may be to the present local development is a question of in terest here. The weekly crop bulletin of the Weather Bureau confirmed some of the reports of un favorable conditions which were a factor in depressing stocks, but it was without effect upon the firmer . tone of the day's market. Much of the day's gains were made In the volatile upshoot of prices with which the mar ket closed. Bonds were Irregular. Total salea. par value, $1,401,000. United Statea bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Bales. High. Low. WHEAT OFF II CENT Rain and Snow in Kansas Cause of Selling at Chicago. CABLES ARE ALSO EASIER Crop Expert Says That Many of the Reports of Damage by the Green Bug Were Greatly Exaggerated. CHICAGO. April 16. Reports of rain and snow la Kansas caused general selling today In the wheat market and brought about a de cline of almost lo a bushel. The reports of rain and) enow in the Southwest were uncon firmed by the Weather Bureau, but neverthe less traders placed confidence In them and sold freely all day. Other weakening In. flueacee at the opening were easy cables and liberal Northwestern receipts. A crop expert lust returned from the South, west claimed that many of the reports of damage by the green bug were greatly exag gerated. This stimulated the selling move ment In the latter part of the day. Offerings throughout the day came chiefly from longs. Shorts were the best buyers. The market closed weak. May opened, o lower to o higher at 78978c sold off to T7o and closed at 7878c. Corn was weak because of a probability of improved weather conditions and a revival of farm work. Increased local receipts apd the decline in wheat were additional Influences. Longs were the best sellers. The market closed weak. May corn opened a ehade higher at 47c sold oft to 46 c and closed at 47c Sentiment In oats was bearish. May oats opened a shade higher at 44c soldi off to 43a and dosed at 48 c. First place, Independent Franchises and contracts on state rights, together with the heavy bonds required from the Chi--cago Automatic Electric Company prohibit and. make such things impossible. Second place, they haven't enough money to take care of their own dilapidated, shot-to-pieces, all-in service, without tak ing on new liabilities. If you would wake tip to consider the source of such infor mation, and why such talk is turned loose at this time it would dawn on you. "There is a reason." WHAT THE CHINAMAN SAYS: .
