GftNNERS TO BLAME
Blight Fruit-Packing Industry
by Their Tactics.
PAY GROWERS TOO LITTLE
AV. K. Xewell, President of State
Board of Horticulture, Calls At
tention to Bad Business
Methods Now In Vogue.
That tha fruit canning Industry of Ore
ron is tillBhted by low prices paid for
' fruit by canners Is the declaration of
W. K. Newell, of Washinston County,
president of tha State Board of Horticul
ture and Rperesentative for his county In
Vie legislature. He asserts that canners
. ran afford to pay higher prices to grow
ers and that they would make more
, money by doing it.
In this state there are only seven can
neries, and they do not supply the home
. market with Jams and jellies and fruits.
Two are at Portland, two at The Dalles
and one at each of the towns of Ashland,
Sprlnnbrook and Salem. New canneries
are now starting at Albany, Eugene, Mon
mouth, MUton and La Grande, and an
other Is projected at Lebanon.
"Great wealth con be created out of the
' fruit canning and preserving business."
' Mid Mr. Newell yesterday. "But the
I prices paid for the fruit to growers have
been too low and have dwarfed. the busi
ness. Do you know that arounfl Portland
fewer strawberries and raspberries are
i produced than 10 or 15 years ago? Yet
. the land about Portland is well adapted
to raising those berries. The people have
not been planting vines, because they
knew it was no use; they could not get
high enough prices to make a living.
Seattle Invades Field.
"Portland canners have allowed pro
duction to diminish. But now comes a
Seattle cannery, trying to buy strawber
ries for shipment to Seattlo for canning
there, and can't get big enough supplies.
This cannery can afford to pay better
prices for strawberries than, the Portland
canneries, with shipping cost added in
and still make money. It is trying to
make long-term contracts for delivery of
fruit at prices profitable for growers.
"The representative of the Seattle can
nery told me several days ago that a
well-known Eastern company, which
makes a specialty of jams and Jellies,
tried vainly to obtain 10 carloads of rasp
berries last year In this territory. It
seems that this country does not produce
enough berries to make jam. It Imports
larne quantities of such product that
ought to be made at home.
Big; Openings in Oregon.
"There arp big openings in Oregon for
canneries. They need large supplies of
fruit. Lrge supplies ought not to hurt
growers' prices. It has been customary,
however, for canneries to use a surplus
In the market to bear down prices, where
as. If they did their duty, there would be
no surplus.' The low prices discouraged
growers and they cut down, their fruit
product In successive seasons. Then the
canners howled that they couldn't get
fruit enough. i
"Canneries don't take up samples 'of
fruit and then quit. " They need large
Quantities. They've got to have flrst
; class fruit. Nowadays they can't put
up cheap left-over-Saturday-night fruit.''
Mr. Newell predicts an awakening in
' the fruit canning Industry and a reform
. of the methods of existing canneries.

. Goodness Sakes Alive, Yes"
"When I was a girl, a man who did not own property of some kind
was a shiftless, good-for-nothing scamp. ' He either had a little town lot
in the village, a small garden nearby, a 20 or 40-acre piece close in or a
nice, large farm somewhere in the country. My gracious, it was a diffi
cult matter, folks, to find a man with out something in the way of land,
even though 'twere not much more than a lot in the graveyard.
"Then, I remember when I came "West. We carried everything we
owned in all this world on four wheels. We went to work in the wilder
ness, and even though we were poor, we had our farm. Everybody
around us thought nothing of owning a farm. The only living beings
that did not have property were Indians, trappers and" scallawags.
"I know it is different now. Alas, things have come to a pretty pass.
Everybody seems to be paying tribute to somebody else for the privi
lege of living under a roof. The lad who married a lass in the olden
days would not dare return to her father's home if he had not a home in
.which to keep his sweet bride.
"I well remember that our father taught us to be frugal. We were
told to" save our pennies for Christmas, for Fourth of July and for
many other things. But the wiser boys saved their pennies and bought
land. Those men are wealthy today, those of them who are left.
"That's why I say, 'Goodness sakes alive, yes!' when you ask me
about Rose City Park. Buy all you can of it. Do not attempt to buy
.more than you can handle with safety.. It is better to buy too little and
keep it, than to buy too much and have to forfeit some of it. If you could
have seen Portland grow up from a little baby to a great, big, strapping
boy, the way I have, you would buy all the property in this city that
you could handle." .
NOTE This statement was made by an elderly woman who
is a pioneer of Portland. Her name cannot be used, for personal
reasons, but if her spirit could actuate the young, growing men
of Portland, there would not be enough Rose City Park lots to
last a fortnight. Especially while they are to be obtained at
present prices and upon the present easy terms. If you let last
week go by without making a move, do not allow the next one to
drift away. Time is pressing, and soon you will not be able to buy
a lot of any kind in Portland at less, than exorbitant prices. -
