TJTE MORNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1907. 13 CAR TURNS ON SIDE Three Men Injured on Russel Shaver Line. LEAVES TRACK ON CURVE Krnest McDaniel, Guy Horraker and Motorman Kimball Injured, but Xot Seriously SeTered Brake Chain Case of Accident. Three men were injured last night when car No. 128. of the Russell-Shaver-street division jumped the track and janaen on its side in the fnud at Commercial and Shaver streets. The Injured are Ernest McDan- iei. irtiy Hamaker and Motorman Kimball. Although none of the injuries are serious, it is almost a marvel that there were no fatalities, as the car con talned a number of passengers at 9:30 o ciock. when the accident occurred. Motorman Kemball ana Conductor Hrady, -who -were in charge of the car, eay that the accident was caused by the severing of a brake-chain Just before the car reached the curve. This allowed the car to swing uncontrolled intofcShaver street, throwing it with considerable force into the roadway. Ernest McDaniel was riding on the front end with the motorman. and was the most seriously injured of the pas sengers. His right foot was badly hurt by being crushed between the fftep and the ground. McDaniel is In th(f employ of the Portland Railway, Iilght & Power Company as assistant electrician at the St. Johns power-house. He is the son of the late Dr. McDaniel, who was killed by a streetcar on Wil liams avenue about one year ago while riding a bicycle across the track. Mc Daniel was attended last night by Dr. (i. W. Tamiesie, who had him taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital. Guy Hamaker. of S71 Alblna avenue, was also painfully injured. He sus tained a number of severe bruises, but is otherwise unhurt. Motorman Kimball was severely shaken tip. Both he and Conductor Brady are considered very careful men, and no blame is attached to them for the mis hap. Division Superintendent Lamb ar rived soon after the accident and di rected th raisins of the car and the clearing of the track. There was only one woman on the car. and she escaped without injury- The acHdcnt caused consternation among the passengers, and for a time it was feared that the Iniurics were more serious than they proved to be. Reports were at first rlrculatcd thnt two passengers had been fatally injured. DAILY CITY STATISTICS Birth. LEVY At n.t Rodney avenue, Marrh 14, to the wife of Arnold Levy, a daughter. M'KENNA TO REMAIN Reconsiders Resignation as Presi dent of Initiative One Hundred. At tlie ureent request of members of the Initiative One Hundred, t rancis l MeKenna. has reconsidered his resigna- tlon from that organization and will re- tain his membership and the presidency. Mr. McKenna withdrew at a recent meet ing because the body refused to indorse the bill for a J1000 saloon license. He lias row reconsidered his decision with the understanding that he shall be allowed without criticism, to work for the bill as an Individual. When the license bill was brought up before the Initiative It was the subject of several heated discussions and threatened to disrupt the society. After the bill had been definitely voted down President McKenna, who had worked for it from first to last, declared that lie wished no longer to be identified with the organiza tion. He declared that the Initiative One Hundred had fallen under the control of the liquor element and compared it in this respect with the Council. Since that meeting Mr. McKenna has had nothing at all to do with the society. Members of the Initiative expressed much rcrct at the action of their presi dent and delayed electing a successor hoping that he would reconsider. Mr. McKenna was the organizer of the society and has always been its leader. There were indications that without him the society would become Moribund. At the last meeting a committee was appointed to wait upon Mr. McKenna and as a re sult of that conference he will now re turn. J. Frank Watson, who was one of the leaders against the license bill, headed the committee that waited upon Mr. Mc Kenna. In reply to their request he agreed to again become president pro vided that another election was held and he was chosen for that office. He also reserved the right to work Independently for the license bill. These conditions had been previously agreed to by the Initia tive One Hundred. WAIT TILL STRIKERS TIRE And in Meantime Bntte Will Go Without Streetcars. BUTTE. Mont.. March 19. The offices of the street railway company were de serted tonight and it looks like a Ions and bitter flght between the management and the members of the Workingmen's Union, the latter being responsible for the tie-up of the road. All kinds of conveyances were in use -upon the streets today and the cab and transfer companies and hackdrivers did a flourishing business. For the benefit of persons living in 'YVnkerville. Centervllle and Meaderville. stages were run at frequent intervals and were well pat ronised. Manager Wharton of the street railway, states that the tie-up will continue until the striking emplyes are tired out, and conclude to go to work at the old scale of $3 per day.
