Building permits for February repr
ent a cost of $KH."3I. which with one ex
ception is the largest record in the his
tory of Portland. The exception Is the
month of May last year, when the per
mits aggregated ?1.0.'!7,7Ky. The permit of
f.JO.000 for the Wells Fargo & Co. build
inK was issued in that month.
The increase of last month-over Febru
ary of last year is 167 per cent, which
is considered a remarkable record. The
permits for February. 1906. amounted to
i'luK.OOO. The grants for January of this
year represented over $W0f0OO.
When it is taken into consideration
that no permits for large buildings were
taken out last month, the record for
"February, 1907, is really unequaied. The
largest permit was to the Portland &
battle Kailroad Company (for two large
Iteight sheds, each to cost $75,000. A per
mit for $KX,000 was granted McOung &
Weatherbee to erect a hotel building on
KM a street between "Washington and
Everett streets.
The large number of permits taken out
for residences make the total so enor
mous. One feature of the statistics is
the large sum being spent on new resi
dences on the Kast Side. The total in
Kant Side residences is nearly $20o.oo,
asainst $85,000 for dwellings on the "West
Side. The average amount for arh per
mit is about $32'"0, as 278 were granted.
The quarter block at the northwest cor
ner of Sixth and Everett streets has been
purchased by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Dolph
for about JHO.OOO for Charles Cardinell.
The consideration named in the deal was
$:3,0W, but other property involved makes
the total amount nearly double that
recorded. There are a small hotel build
ing anu several store buildings upon the
property.
The Realty Association of Portland
has purchased the southeast corner of
Second and Yamhill streets for $70,000.
A three-story brick business block covers
the site, which is occupied by the En
terprise Brewing Company, of San Fran-i-isco.
The Spencer residence on Love joy street
between Twemy-fourth and Twenty-fifth
streets was sold yesterday to a Mr. Bryan
recently from the East. The considera
tion was $11,000.
Tenants of the block bounded by First,
Second, Pine and Ash streets, purchased
by the Portland Railway Company, will
all have to vacate within W days, that
tl-e work of tearing down the buildings
may begin. The block will be used as
a union depot for the electric railways
rentering in Portland. The building is
expected to be completed within two
years.
The Weinhard estate has started to
move six cottages from the quarter block
at the northeast corner of North Tenth
and Hoyt streets to make room for a
thrse-story brick dwelling. The new
building will be devoted to stores Deluw
and furnished rooms above
