Olga nethersole, the woman, is an
INTELLECTUAL AND PHYSICAL ICICLE
, Actress Is Antithesis of the Hectic Le Grande and Camille She Portrays Devoted
Missionary of the Open Air Cult
- AKTHUR A. GREEN.
THE private car . "Nethersole" stands
on a secluded sidetrack: at the foot
of Park street ' In the midst of a
morass, I might make myself more
definite and certain by saying that It SO
Rtoot yesterday It . may have been
switched to an even more prepossessinR
location. The prospect down in .that
railroad yard is one of the most hopeless-
. ly depressing; trat one miht find after a
Ions; search up and down the townske.
Still, if people will persist in living in
private cars they cannot afford to com
plain of the views. Perhaps it is from
such surroundings that Olga Nethersole
absorbs inspiration you never can tell,
as her friend Bernard Shaw says.
It waj amid' the squalid surroundings
which I have Indicated that I found Miss
Jethersole yesterday afternoon. Her sec
tetary. a pleasant domestic appearing;
woman, received me on the front stoop
of the car and made me welcome to their
humble abode. In - the interim, while
she was notifying the actress of my pres
ence, I took: a .brief survey of the obser
vation end of the car. It was an emi
nently businesslike . looking place, the
plce de resistance beinjr a Tnahogany
tielc lt-ttered with correspondence. The
sole touch of "color" that was in evi-
d?nce was a small reproduction or Burne-
Jones ' painting "The Vampire-" with

Presently th vftman I kd comft to

tain" who entered the room. I do not
ay that X expected to see a siren who
tiiieht .lure statu persons from their
najwy toemes, but iter press agents) lia.v
made much of her tropical Spanish blood
and her "languishing" eyes, bo if I had
been dlsallusioned it roig-ht not toave been
surprising;.
Even though I take my life in my hand
I must say it-Miss Nethersole is becom
ing stout. She is distressingly healthy
and is herself a splendid vindication for
her enthusiastic devotion to the fresh
air cure. The doors and windows of her
car were wide open yesterday and are
usually so. I understand. She's almost
a -crank on the subject of ventilation.
But to return to the star herself. Bhe
would not be noted a beauty, but she has
fine, intelligent, earnest eyes and mag
nificent bronze-red hair. She is 37, and
has been 20 years on the stasire. There
are a few faint lines on her face, but ten
years from now she will still be a young
woman. She is of the type which doesn't
worry, particularly about becoming- old.
She Isn't in the least a paaeur. In fact,
she's as unstagey a person as one could
wish to meet. She seems to incline
toward jade jewelry, for I noticed that a
barbaric-looking- pendent and a large
ring- set with this atone were her only
ornaments.
She talks rapidly and with animation,
particularly when she is upon her fav
orite theme, which is. strangely enough,
the prevention of tuberculosis. She told
me more about the "great white plague"'
and the advanced methods of fighting It
than T ever heard in- many discussions of
it with physicians of note, s 1 1 n Olga
Nethersole not become an actress, she
most certainly would have gone Into
medicine and would hav taken rank as
a. physician. She naa two jx purpoaea

them toy all th considerable means of
brains and money uhich -she uosseeses.
These are the adoption of the German

xveUiar&vlsya stwjv , it i awegmpllrcrnf;
wonders In England and the Eastern
cities of this country in the way of educating-
the masses in the matter of preventing-
the ravages of consumption. The
ddstineulshed actress is one of its foun
ders and has delivered scores of addresses
in Its Dehalf.4 She has enlisted the sup
port o Queen Alexandria and. many
others of international influence.
While her consuming desire to battle
the consumption evil seems to be upper
most she is an enthusiastic socialist, her
interest in it leading her to deliver ad
dresses and contribute thoughtful papers
In Its cause.
I had a' task to induce her' to "talk
shop." and when I Anally asked her point
hlank If she had any defense to offer for
the problem drama she disposed of the
question briefly In order that she might
expatiate further upon her hobbles.
I think such plays as 'Sapho'
teach a good lesson?" The lady empha
sized 'think." "I know they do. When I
present Sapho and 'her like upon the
stage I am doing the work of a phy
sician of morals. I ajsn an exponent of
the dramatized lecture and know that I
have made men and women better, An
audience may come to the theater to
scoff but before the play is over I have
made most of those In it think deeply and
have stirred their better selves. The
Immoral theatrical entertainment Is not
wich a play as 'Sapho.1 That treats a
dlicat subject seriously, but the liaht.
frothy fare or- musical comedy - which
makes a Joke of marital Infidelity and a
byword of virtue."
Kor several years" Miss Kethersole
says "yahrs" Tve strudled social Ques
tions and have demonstrated to my own
satisfaction at least, and to many others,
I hope, that people can he taught from
the stage of a theater. The drama baa a
higher mission than to amuse."
This and more she told me and I'm con-
vlnced that the good and brilliant woman,
who devotes her surpassing' talents to
portraying bad women. Is honest in her
belief that she's a reformer. There is
awtj tbp aitgtatsst trace C ttie ctiarlataa
!n her manner. She impressed me with
her genuine womanliness. She's as far
removed from the types she plays as the
poles. She may toe the most hectic Fanny
Le Grand or Camille on the stage, tout In
the woman. Olga Kethersole, she is an
Intellectual and a physical icicle.
They do say that she also has one of
the canniest business heads known to
science and that she lan beat the best
of them at the finance fame. She has
been . her - own manager tor almost 14
years, and with the exception of her
brother Louis, who directs her tours and
accompanies her everywhere, she trusts
her affairs to no one. Granting: that she
likes the money which "Sapho" and the
other 'soiled dove" dramas have made
and are making for her. I'm convinced
that Miss Nethersole feela that she is
doing a good work In the world by show
ing the thoughtless that the scale of sin's
wages Is fixed and certain, neither higher
nor lower .than death.
Maybe she's ristht. . Maybe we need the
problem play and perhaps she's one of
the greatest moralists of our time. Maytoe
again we don't and she isn't. I leave it
to you.
