week, caused a rush of selling which, carried

Northwestern receipts also had a depressing
effect. Toward the first hour, the market had

NEW YORK. Jan. 4. Speculative aentl-
ment was precipitated into tangible form
on the side of higher values today. Substan
tial advances resulted from the general dis
position to buy atocks. A hesitating short
interest, which had been added o during
the week: was an Important element In the
day's buying.
The pronounced relaxation in the money
market was the underlying ground for the
advance. Funds on call were in apparent
abundance and the rate did not ret over
6 per cent, with the ruling rate for the day
betow that. Forres which have brought about
this condition promise to continue active for
some time to come. The consequence was
to allay much of the apprehension which haa
been felt that no actual ease In the money
market could be counted upon for the Spring
period. The large projects which have been
undertaken and for which it ia Important
tnat the market should show absorptive
power ore regarded an assurance of effec
tive leadership in anv market campaign.
The estimates of the week's currency
movement make tt evident that a substantial
Inflow from the Interior to New York ha set
in and is likely to be extended in view of
the seasonable subsidence ot requirement
for move men t of the crops.

mnrket, there was a revived demand for re
mittance abroad through the exchange mar
ket. The fact that the rise in roreign ex
