Speaker of the House. Mr. Hunt ley told

noon that he saw no reason why he
should not make his choice public.
Joint Representative J. 1. Campbell and
Representatives' Linn E2.- Jones and
Charles H, Dye decline to make a state
ment (or publication at this time. Mr.
Jones states that he has not made up his
mind. and. though his vote has been so
licited by both Davey and Vawter, he has
given neither of them assurance or In-
formation to warrant a belief that he has
come to a conclusion.
Colonel Dye and Mr. Campbell are non-
committal. The former is classed in the
Davey column, but would not confirm the
report.
Mr. Campbell will not admit that he Is
for Vawter, as has been reported.

Benton County Man Has Given
Promise to Neither Candidate.

Senator-elect A. J. Johnson, of Benton, Is
not tied up to either of the aspirants -in
the race for the Presliienoy of the Sen
ate. He has been frequently aligned with
the followers of Senator Hodson, and was
today axked if he had made a line-up in
the fight. He declared emphatically that
he had not, and said:
"I stand Just as I have stond all aloni-
ahimlutely unpledged on the Presidency of

porter of Senator Hodson. but I presume

appears that under the new law the State

on the security bonds hem by him for

companies.
The Secrettrv of State will turn in
about SO0O a year, the fees to this amount
being received Irani notary commissions,
certified copies of records, a percentage of
xne insurance llrenses, and the Insurance
license fees. This will make a total of

The flat salary law also cuts off nernui-

the flat salary law. The flat salary law
raised the salary of the Governor from
915O0 to $5000. that of the Secretary of State
from $1500 to $4500. that of the State Treas-
u r er from J 800 to $4500 and that of the
Attorney-General from S3000 to S3SOO. show-

This gain Is more apparent than real.
however, for the enactment of this law

officers has started a demand for a raise
n other offices and a movement Is on foot
to have the present officers relieved of
some of the duties they performed here
tofore, because they received the fees and
perquisites paid for the sorvice.
It is proposed, for Instance, that a
tate Board of Control be created to per
form the work heretofore done by a boarcl
composed of the Governor. Secretary of
State snd State Treasurer. If this should
be done the new board would cost tlie
State more than the paving of 7300 a year.
Then. too. the perquisites referred to
above are. those -which were paid to the
Oovernar. Secretary of State and State
Treasurer for serving- on the several
hoards. These sums were paid out ot tne
appropriations for the several state in
stitutions. Now that, tlie money will not
be paid to the state officers out of the an-
proprtations for the institutions. - u win
be available for other purposes.

to remove a boulder from the track of
the -Clearwater branch of the Northern
Pacific.
As the Stltes train rounded a curve
near Pardee the enplnWr saw a rock on
the track: almost as large as a freight
car. It had just rolled down the moun-
tain side. The train was brought to a
sudden stop, and backed away a safe
distance to permit the train crew to blow
the obstruction to pieces with dyna

Friday afternoon, and neither has been

O'Bryeh, a brakeman on a freight train

field.' was killed at - Mount Angel while
attempting to couple cars. He was
thrown under the wheels and both legs
and one arm severed. He lived about tea
minutes after the accident.

The shingle mills bureau organized to
control the output of the Washington
shingle mills Is losing its grip on the
trade and it is certain a large percentage
of the mills closed last month at tlie
bureau's suggestion will resume cutting
shingles within a few days, a month
earlier than has been planned.
The Pacific Lumber Wholesalers' Club
fostered by the shingle mills bureau, has
decided to disincorporate and the plan of
controlling the output to keep up prieesj

split Into two factions and rival clubs
were organized. Then the jobbers be-
came suspicious of each other and when

five steamships, four of wli ich are now
in port, have resigned. Officers on the
vessels of the Pacific Coast Steamship
Company will be asked by the Masters'

sider this. The overtime clause calls
for 60 cents an hour after 7 o'clocK
in the evening-. Nine hours was placed

once Assistant Attorney-General of the
