14 THE MORNING OREGONIAN; WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1906. E Crew Receive $65 Each for Trip Up the Coast. GLENERIChTS MEN PAID Scarcity of Seamen on Coast Cap tain Evans, of British Bark, Im plores Aid for Dismantled Vessel Off Coast. Seven "runners" who came in on the .British bark Glenericht were paid off 'yesterday in the office of British Consul fLaldlaw. The men were shipped at San KDIcbo for the trip to Portland and re irplvpa $C5 each for the--voyage. A scarci ty of sailors on the Coast puts the ship 'inaster up against it for 'short runs. Kviille $65 is not the top figure that has fljecn asked for these short coast trips kit is so close to the maximum that it (deserves attention 'Several years ago a mate who received 0 rer month had a tjirst-chiss berth and off-shore sailors re ceived from $1S to tM. In the name of humanity Captain Avails implores someone to put off in Miearch of the dismantled craft sighted liy him off the mouth of the Columbia. "Captain Evans i,s firmly convinced that the vessel lias life aboard, and from the 'position she occupied when last seen, it IvlU be only a matter of a few days until :he piles up on the barren coast of Van couver Island, unless she founders or is iplckrd up by some steamer. Captain Evans has made a report of file matter to W. H. Leadbetler, in rhnrpo of the local branch of the hydro Riaphic office, and the latter has wired the department at Washington in an en deavor to get a vessel put out in search of the disabled craft. There are three, 'siiips now available for that work on J'uRct S?mind one gunboat and two reve nue cutters. . From the position occupied by the ves sel when sWted by Captain Evans it Is bis inference that she was an iron oiaft and loaded. She was too far in shore to bo headed for the Sound and In his estimation had probably been load ed at one of the Sound cities and bad lieen badly dealt with by the terrible storms of the last three weeks. When first seen the ship was about 120 miles northwest of the North Head llRlit nnd about "0 miles off shore. She was drifting steadily toward the west coast of Vancouver Island. That there was life aboard was evident from the fact that she was under sail and under con trol when first sighted. KOirAIiA AKRIVES AT ASTORIA Tedious Trip I'p Coast From San IVanclseo. ABERDEEN. At the annual meeting of the Manufac turers' Association of the Northwest, held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms last night, it was shown that in the year past Portland has made great strides in all lines of manufacturing. Fletcher Linn, president of the association, said 'that the past year has been the greatest Port land has ever known. ' "In the past we were called upon to offer a bonus to each manufacturer com ing into the city," said he, "but those days are past. We have only had two requests for a bonus during the past year, and but a very few calls for free sites. These,, of course, we could not consider." The president then told of a chair fac tory which is being established by the Oregon Chair Company, of which A. J. Kingsley is the official head., adjoining the building of the Oregon Furniture Com pany, between here and Fulton. The building is 60 by 160 feet, and has been erected at a cost of from J75.000 to $80,000. It will employ 125 men. Secretary C. II. Mclsaac told of another chair factory to be established at Bast Twenty-eighth street and Sandy road. The Doernbecher Manufacturing Company has purchased seven acres at this place and will erect a building which, with ma chinery and equipment, will cost $50,000. Mr. Linn stated that S. G. Reed, of the Portland General Electric Company, In talking with him stated that twice as much, power had been sold during the past year as in any previous year. After the reading of the secretary's an nual report the proposition to amalgamate the association with the Chamber of Commerce was talked over, and R. R. Hoge, president of the latter organiza tion, cordially invited the association to become a board of the chamber. Secre tary Mclsaac said that if the organiza tion must die he would rather see It die in this way than in any other. By unani mous vote the matter of affiliation was referred to the board of directors, who will report on the matter at a called meet ing of the association. Wallis Nash said that Oregon would soon see an influx of paper manufacturers, as there is abundant material here for that -industry. He also spoke of the im mense power going to waste on the Clack amas and other rivers of Oregon. The following directors were elected to serve during the next three years: Charles Coopey, R. J. Holmes, Thomas B. Kay (of Salem), Walter A. Goss. O E. Heintz. J. P. Wllber (of Union), George Lawrence and T. J. Armstrong. Alvord were chosen members of the board of directors of which the officers elected are ex-officio members. It is the intention of the association to express as nearly as possible the senti ment of the entire state in regard to game, laws and to this end -a number of resolutions were passed which will be submitted to the Legislature. The trustees of the Chamber of Com merce, at a meeting yesterday morning, adopted a resolution in favor of a Gov ernment appropriation for the Improve ment of the harbor at Hllo on the Island of Hawaii. The improvement of this harbor wtfl mean an increase of trade between Portland and Hilo. There is at present no dock at that port, ships being compelled to use lighters in loading and unloading.
