POULTRY Good week forecasted.
.The week has opened up with a good volume
of business in the hop market. It is etill on
export proposition, but It Is believed that
Karitern order will soon become a factor. With
a good demand from the Ea.it, primes and
th; lower graded will begin to find favor. At
ttu- present time it is only choice shipping
qualities that are being bought up. These
command the highest going prices.
There were rumors current yesterday that
over 1G cents had been paid and it was said
here that Burch. of Rickreall. had refused 17
cents. At Salem the report was thut he had
i been offered 'j ct-nt better, Hn aftornoon die
. patuh from that city eaid that iichmund an
nounced he had order fur liMHl bales of choice
hops at 17 cents. If any of the Portland deal-
era were preparing to rai.se the limit, they
t were nnt giving their business away. Several
lut were purchased during the day by Kluber,
M'olf & Net tor, among them the Br.da lot of
11.1 bales at Pllverton. the Kuclie and Aleher
lots of 170 bales at Woodburn. and the Arel
lot of I4 bales at Gervals. Krebs Bros, were
ivportwd to have made purchases In the For
est Grove section. There were rumors that
ttte Fry it & Williams lot at Carlton had been
toid for ltl'i cents.
The following dispatch was received from
. Salrm last night :
"Salem, Or., Oct. 22. (Special.) The hop
market at Salem took on a Mill firmer tone
today when reports were received from sev
eral sources at Dallas that 17 Vi cents was re
fused today by Sam Burch, who has a crop
of 324 bales of choice hops. The offer was
made by Carmiihacl, representing AVigan,
ltlehardon & Co., of London. This price prob
ably marks the extreme top of the market to
day, however, for the Burch crop is of extra
quality. Seventeen cents is being offered free
ly by three firms Wigan, Richardson & Co.,
Klaber. Wolf & Netter and Louis Lachmund
& Co."
In the past few days Carmichael has bought
In the neighborhood of 2(X)0 bales of hops for
export. Among the crops bought by him were
the Foster crop, 248 bales; the Bell crop, 147
bale; the Plankfngton crop, 174 bales; Lee
Jtrothes. 116 bales, all of Perrydale; the Kuens
ting crop, 74 bales, at Gcrvais; the Morley
crop, 58 balce, at Silverton; the Keding Bros.'
crop, 114 bales, at Mt. Angel, all at 10 cents."
The report In the local market was 'that
bolh the Foster and Morley lota were secured
at 15 cents. However, the market la exceed
ingl y st rang and the growers, at least, are
confident that the trend is upward.
Yesterday's foreign advices were exceedingly
satisfactory. A London cable reported re
newed inquiry and a German cable announced
an advance of 2 cents in the German market,
due to the exceptionally heavy buying of
choice tiermans for London account.
Purchases of 100 bale of California hops
were reported in a wire received in the after
noon. A dispatch from Washington stated that
there had been heavy buying of the lver
Srade of Western Wa-htntcn.

I J ggs In Jom Supply and SU-udy Improve
ment in Imiltry Expected
The prospects are for a better poultry mar-
ket this week, unless receipts should prove to
I be heavy.
1 Errs were In good supply yesterday and held
Steady.
Butter quotations were urn-harmed. On Front
street stock were large and the tone of the
market was reported weak. The- city cream
series reported a good movement. Some of the
Jj'ortland companies. It la understood, are pre
fparlng to advance to SJ'i cents, to which
figure one local establishment went some time
ri. The creamery at Damascus is also quot
ing that price, Country store butter finds a
food market, but arrivals are as yet limited.
Plenty of Grape.
The week opened tip actively in the fruit
nd vegetable market. A large shipment of
; rapes, about 4K crates, arrived by express
from California. Tokays and Cornlchons
rought an average price of $1.26 and Thomp
son's seedless $1.50. The grapes received by
afteamer were not In good condition. One car
tf green Valencia oranges and one car of
awect potatoes also arrlvrd. Local vegetables
Of all kinds were In good supply.
Wonny Apples Condemned.
Twenty boxes of wormy apples were con
demned on Front street yesterday by County
Fruit Inspector Delch. They were shipped In
from Forest Grove and Wheatland. There are
foma apple shippers in the country . who
think the Inspector's duties are confined to
peeping scaly fruit out of this market. He
find wormy applet just as obnoxious as those
jinfected with San Jose scale.
Strong Iemand for Fancy Potatoes,
i A strong shipping demand continues for the
cst Oregon Burbar.k potatoes, and buyers are
paying $1 to $110 for extra fancy lots. They
report that the choicest kinds are very drffi
fcult to find now. It W the opinion of the
rade that good prices are likely to prevail
intil the second crop begins to come in.

Stocks That They Sold at a

Conditions Improve,
NEW YORK. Oct. 22. There was a vio
lent rebound in prices of stocks today which
went far to wipe out the heavy declines of
Friday and Saturday. The interval after the
market closed on Saturday In a state of. de
moralization, and when it opened today
showed some important developments and
gave rise to rumors of .others of still great
er importance. The consequence was a re
vulsion In sentiment which sent operators
scrambling to buy stocks who had made
desperate efforts to sell them at any price
on Saturday.
Results of the Bank of England's six per
cent" discount rate In the world's mar
kets were much less than were feared. In
this market, call money, lending at 7 per
cent, fell back promptly to 6 per cent, and
later in the day to considerably below thai
point.
Very confident hopes were engendered,
however, that relief measures would be
forthcoming. The nature of this relief was
left mostly in the realm of conjecture dur
ing the day, although there was credible
authority lor the current belief. The first
of such measures to receieve attention was
the rumored agreement of the Bank ot
France to transfer as a loan $30,000,000 to
$40,000,000 to- the Bank of England. There
is great confidence that the Bank of France
could finance bills maturing in the imme
diate future in London and secure the privi
lege of renewal for a defined period. Tnis
had something to do with this sentiment.
The failure of a Stock Exchange member
was without ' effect on the market. The
day's extreme advance of in Anaconda,
7 In Northern Pacific, 4hit in Reading and
Northern Pacific, aA In Union Pacific, St.
Paul, Amalgamated Copper and Smelting
and 1 to 3 points- in many other active
stocks served to indicate the Important ex

the gains well maintained.

Begs to Announce that it is in the market for
Eagle's Nest pairview Mining Company's stock
and Lou Dillon Goldfield Mining Co.'s stock
We bid 42V2 cents per share for Eagle's Nest Fairview
Mining Company's shares in any sized blocks. If you have
any of this stock you . desire to sell, notify us by wire of
sales, attach your certificates to draft, and ship through the
bank to us. The draft will be honored promptly upon reach
ing us.
We bid 32V2 cents for Lou Dillon Goldfield Mining Com
pany's stock in any sized blocks. If you have shares in this
company that you want to dispose of, notify us of sale to us
by wire, attach certificates to draft and ship through your
bank. -The draft will be promptly honored.
We promoted these two companies during the past twenty
days. Eagle's Nest treasury stock Was sold at 35 cents per
share; Lou Dillon Goldfield treasury stock was offered for
subscription and the allotment heavily oversubscribed at 30
cents per share.
The Eagle's Nest Fairview Mining Company's estate at
Fairview has improved so rapidly with development that
there is a tremendous demand for the stock, and we can sell
a great deal of the issue at prices much higher than we are
now bidding for it. High-grade shipping ore has been en
countered in the property, and if there is one thing more sure
than another it is that the Eagle's Nest will develop into one -of
the great bonanza silver-gold mines of the state and that
the shares will continue to advance steadily until selling at par. '
If we had the treasury allotment of Lou Dillon Goldfield
intact we could sell it within a few days. An unprecedented
demand for this issue has developed, owing to the tremen-;
dous mine showing the company's estate presents. Mining'
men here are among the heaviest buyers of this stock. One
of the most important developments on the property is the
opening up of six feet of good ore by lessees on block No. 1.
We are deluged with orders for Lou Dillon "at the market"
and can sell many thousand shares at prices higher than
our bid.
WE DO NOT ESSAY TO CAJOLE STOCKHOLDERS
OF THESE TWO COMPANIES INTO DISPOSING OF
THEIR HOLDING. BUT IF THERE IS ANY OF EITHER
STOCK FOR SALE, WE ARE ANXIOUS TO PROCURE IT.

CONDITIONS IN LONDON BETTER.
After a Heavy Opening a Boom Takes Place
in Stocks.
LONDON, Oct. 22. The tone of the Stock
Exchange generally this morning -as more
hopeful, operators having about concluded
that the 6 per cent discount rate of the
Bank of England would prove favorable
in stemming the outflow of gold.
-American securities had an exciting morn
ing. Saturday's break in Wall Btreet caused
a "heavy liquidation here, and there were
many sales from the Continent. At the
opening values were over a point below
parity, but good support was soon forthcom
ing, and there was quite a boom before noon,
prices being rushed up two points from the
lowest quotations, and the whole list prac
tically recovered the parity loss. For In
stance Union Pacific, which was offered at
184, rose to 187, and Canadian Pacific, which
was offered at 176, went up to 179.
'Some good American buying orders helped
the recovery, which also was aided by the
report that the Bank of Fraace was, pre
paring to assist the Bank of England to the
extent of $30,000,000 to $40,000,000 In gold.
All the pold available in the open market
today. $1.2."0,OO0. was secured by the Bank
of England. There was no competition on
the part of the United States, and the
price was reduced an eighth of a penny.
Indicating the belief on the part of the bank
that it will be able to bul!oup its reserve
by securing the larger amount of the metal
available next week.
stocks on the Bourse today were 1 to 4
points lower during the first few hours, but
later a better tone prevailed on London ad
vices, and the losses were partially recovered.
