HOPS LOOK BETTER
Improvement Suddenly Ap
pears in Export Demand.
ACTIVE WEEK IS EXPECTED
Englibh Orders Have Been on Hand
for Several Days Choice
Growers Firm Holders.
The Latest Sales.
HOPS Strong English demand ex
cites market.
WHEAT Strike interferes with
trade.
FLOUR Good Oriental inquiry.
FRUIT Rain checks loral buying1.
POULTRY Receipts light and de
mand elow.
EOC.S Ranch stock scarce.
BUTTER Local conditions un
changed. A cable received from London yesterday re
ported that an active demand had sprung up
in tho hop market, which was excited and
dearer.. The news created no little excitement
In the local market. Ever alnce the official
English crop figure were given out the
trade has been looking for ordem from Eng
land. notwithstanding1 the oft-repeated asser
tions that brewers were sufficiently supplied
with last year's hops. Cable messages with
instruction to buy began reaching this etate
the latter part of last week and now that the
London market has begun to advance, hop
men look for business that will make this the
most active week of the r.eason so far.
There were a number of would-be sell
ers In town yesterday, but not so many
as some hopmen thought. The same crowd,
visited each office in succession, and their
numbers wero therefore magnified. The
hops offered for pale were in most cases
of the lower grade. No really choice hops
are being peddled about town. The hold
ers of such goods have the best of It now
and they know it, too.
Among the transactions of yesterday was
the purchase by Hans C. Wnhlherg, of thia
city, of 115 bales of choice "hops from Fred
Elwert, of Sherwood, at 15 cents. Several
other salus at 14 and 15 cents were report
ed from t'ne country, but the particulars
were not obtainable.
A late purchase in the "W'oodburn district
was the Johnson lot of 1S1 bales, which
Kola Nels ecu red at 14 cents. Joseph
Harris, at the close of the week, bought
120 bales of primes from Pat Mullen, of
St. Paul, at 14 cents, and the 80-bale Tod
fast lot at the same place at 14 H cents.
Lachmund & Plncus made a purchase of
10 bales at 14 cents, but the name of tho
grower and the section were not learned.
Quiet Buying In Vanihlll.
M'MINNVILLE, Or., Oct. 15. Ppeoial.)
During the past week there have been a few
purchases of hops in thlA vicinity and a dis
position among buyers to convey the Idea that
the market has not opened. Among tho tales
wera 60 bales from the Apperson yard over
what was contracted for which Louis Lach
mund & Co. paid 15 cents. W. C. Miller sold
what he had over his contractabout the tame
number of bales, at 15 cents to Joseph Harris.
John Hacket sold to I'lnous of Salem, fil bales
of baby hops at 12 cents. The Apperson lot
of a total of 230 bales was shipped to England
as were alcto the Hacket baby lvps. Lachmund
A Co. also shipped the J. W. Fletcher lot of
about 20 bales to England. The growers an
ticipate better prices and very little dispo
sition Is shown to sell even at 15 cents.
STILL BUYING WHEAT.
But Market Shows Effect of the Water
front Strike.
Conditions in the local wheat market are
much as they were a week ago. Export
ers are buying fairly well in tho country,
but their operations are still hampered by
the dock strike, and unless the situation
Improves they may wit hdraw altogether
from the market as buyers.
The export flour demand holds steady and
the movement is about an good as it usu
ally is at this season of the year.

General Public Neglects the
Stock Market.
TRADE ALMOST STAGNANT
Vnion Pacific and Reading Under
. Selling Pressure Humors of Gov
ernment Measures Being Taken
Against the Former Road.
NEW YORK. Oct. 15. Today's stock mar
ket was but a dull affair. There was a con
siderable number of shares sold during the
first hour, but after that the trading became
almost stagnant. The selling was most no
ticeable in Union Pacific and Reading. Revived
assertion that Government measures were In
contemplation to contest some of the Union
Pacific's holding of lands taken over from the
public domain were given as one ground for
the weakness. Active selling was attributed to
the so-called Western parties in the specula
tion, who have been credited, with 'most of the
large operations in the market for some time,
whether on the long or the short side. The
public attitude towards the market la one of
entire neglect.
Conditions in the money market were little
changed, but the upward course in sterling ex
change, which was a marked feature of the
last week's events, was sharply reversed and
there was a considerable reaction. Sterling
also fell at Paris and Berlin. The point of
relaxation was not in London, for discounts
rose again there. The Bank of England se
cured all the gold arriving in the market at
a reduction from the previous price. It was
reported that Berlin bankers were discussing
methods of discrimination against American
finance bills, such as were employed by the
Bank of England before the advance in its
official rate.
A number of dividends were payable to
day and shipments were made of between
$2,000.0110 to $3,000,000 to Toronto, said to be
for the protection of the position of a re
cently merged bank. Money rates here were
not perceptibly firmer but last week's receding
tendency was no longer in evidence.
Most of the early declines were recovered In
the slow hardening movement, but the closing
was slightly irregular.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value,
S1.206.0C0. United States bonds were unchanged
on call.

OUR FALL PROMOTIONS
WILL REPEAT THE
PERFORMANCE
HERE THEY ARE :
Eagle's Nest Fairview Mining Co. -Lou
Dillon Goldfield Mining Co. - -
As-You-Like-It
Each of these companies owns a great gold mining property, situated in the immediate vi
cinity of other bonanza mines of its respective district, and believed by our famous mining engi
neer, who has never been connected with a mining failure, to have a tremendous future.
All three are under the same capable, honest management. Governor John Sparks, of Ne
vada, is President; John D. Campbell, President of the Indian Camp and Stray Dog, is Vice
President ; L. M. Sullivan, president of the L. M. Sullivan Trust Co., is Treasurer, and James E.
Degan, Cashier of the Nye & Ormsby Co. Bank, of Goldfield, is Secretary.
These Fall Issues have been practically over subscribed, in advance of public announcement,
by bankers, brokers and mining men throughout the country, and we have been able to reserve
only 100,000 shares of each for investors who shall now make direct subscription. These stocks
will be listed on the important exchanges of San Francisco, Salt Lake, Goldfield and New York
immediately after subscriptions are closed, and will, beyond a doubt, at once command a premium.
We recommend both stocks as high-class speculative investments and probable big future dividend-payers.
Jteservations should be made by telegraph to insure consideration, and remittances in full by
bank draft or certified check must be forwarded immediately after allotment is made. Otherwise
allotment will be rendered void. The right is reserved to reduce or refuse any subscription tendered.
