St. Johns Citt Hall. The St. Johns
City Council has ascertained that to build
a new city hall according to the archi
tect's plans will cost about J1000 In ex
cess of the funds available for that pur
pose. New bids will now be called for,
the proposition being to build as planned,
but not to complete the structure until
more money car) be had for the purpose.
It is the purpose of the Council to erect
and inclose the building as quickly as
possible, then fit up only such rooms as
are absolutely necessary. Steel cells for
the Jail will not be Included in the new
plans, as the two now In use can prob
ably be used with some alterations. The
Hayes street improvement, which was
held up by an Injunction on five blocks
by J. S. Downing, will be readvertised,
leaving out that portion. The proposed
improvement will cover 10 blocks. The
Council now proposes to Improve 2300 feet
on the same grades est;Bshed by the
- City Knglneer. The City Recorder will
call for bids this week.

sewer, two gangs of men having started

both ends. The portal for the sewer at
the west end begins underneath the track
of the O. W. P. The bcre will be 12
feet In diameter all the way through and
through cement gravel the entire dis
tance. The character of the ground will
not necessitate supports to prevent cav
ing, but the work will be hard and
tedious. The earth taken out will be
sold to contractors for filling in low
grounds. The contractors have ordered
a sewer digging machine for the open
"work. It will be here in about three
weeks. Stone blocks for the bottom of
the sewer will come from a quarry on
the Lower Columbia, where they will be
cut ready for use before shipment. The
arch of the sewer will be of brick, all the
walls being one foot In thickness.

BIG DISPLAY OF ART RUGS
At Jabour's Window, 841 Washing
ton Street.
One of the many facts demonstrated by
George Jabour & Co., exclusive import
ers of Oriental rugs and carpets, since the
bjg store was opened up at Seventh and
Washington streets, is that It is practical
to sell rugs at a moderate price and at
the same time give the customers a
splendid variety from which to select.
From the large business the firm is do
ing it Is evident that the public appre
ciates fair dealings and reasonable prices,
as for a long time Portland people have
been paying exorbitant prices for similar
but Inferior goods. Yesterday a big ship
ment of a beautiful selection of rugs was
received by George Jabour & Co. direct
from Constantinople and Persia, and
which Is now on display.
This Is an exceptional opportunity for
Portland people to Inspect the finest col
lection of Turkish rugs and carpets ever
exhibited on the Pacific Coast. The rugs
vary in price from $10 up, which the com
pany guarantees to be at least 25 per cent
lower than the prices charged for rugs
and carpets 'equally as good by any other
retail store in the United States.
Among the magnificent pieces received,
and one which is on display In the win
dows. Is a gorgeous silk-woven Persian
carpet, which is 14 feet long and 9 feet t
inches wide. It Is one of the very best
genuine Persian carpets ever exhibited
outside of Persia. There are many small
er silk rugs and carpets which are of
fered at such reasonable figures that it
is well worth the time of almost any per
son to call and examine them, whether or
not contemplating purchase.
