BUILT POOR SCHOOLS. .
Directors Charge Poor Materials,
Unsubstantial Structures and Dis
regard of Specifications.
The work of Contractor J. E. Bennett
on threje Portland school buildings was
severely criticised at the regular meet
ing the School Board last night. It
was charged that the specifications
have not been followed and that the
buildings are not of the substantial
character the school directors bar
gained for. The buildings whose con
struction has been declared faulty are
the Holman, Sunnyslde and East Twenty-eighth-street
Schools. The contract
for these buildings was secured by Mr.
Bennett.
Architect T. I Jones, of the School
Board, stated that the work on the
three school buildings Is not up to the
requirements and his statements are
borne out by Directors Wittenberg and
Fleischner. The directors will hold a
session tomorrow afternoon, when Con
tractor Bennett is expected to be in
attendance to show cause why his work
should not be condemned. The claim set
up by the School Board is that the stip
ulations of the contract for the erec
tion of the schools has not been fol
lowed strictly and that the buildings
are not of stable character required by
the city. It Is further claimed that poor
material has been used in their con
struction and on these counts the con
tractor Is to be required to render an
accounting or forfeit the contract and
the work already performed.
William Deveny, on behalf of the cit
izens of Mount Tabor, appeared before
the board and requested the directors
to consider the proposition of erect
ing another school building in that dis
trict. The petitioner stated that a com
mittee of three had been appointed
from Mount Tabor and was to appear
before the board, but explained the ab
sence of his fellow committeemen by
saying that they probably were misin
formed as to the time of the meeting.
The board listened to his plea for sev
eral minutes and when he had con
cluded the the directors assured him
that the proposition would b taka us
at the January meeting of the board,
but that nothing could be done now ow
ing to the fact that they were without
funds for use In such a matter.
In addition to the Bennett case the
proposed appointment of teachers will
probably occupy the attention of the
6chool Board at the meeting which Is
scheduled to be held at 2 o'clock this
afternoon at the offices of - Superinten
dent Rlgler.
Another Important transaction of the
School Board was the decision to en
gage Professor J. H. Mason as physical
director of both High Schools com
mencing January 1. Professor Mason
has had considerable experlenoe in this
line, having had charge of classes in
gymnastics in several schools of New
York and Brooklyn and comes to Port
land highly recommended. The salary
for the position was fixed at $1000.
Two new Janitors were appointed. F.
C. Malcolm will attend to the duties at
the Peninsular School and J. F. Tum
blen will take care of the Woodstock
School. The appointment of the Janitors
for the Olencoe and Center Addition
schools will be confirmed at the meet
ing this afternoon.
After the usual routine the board
adjourned on motion -of Director Wit
tenberg until 2 o'clock this afternoon,
when several important transactions
are to come before the meeting.
HEROIC DEED RECALLED
Salem Suicide Rescued Girl on Mt.
Hood Five Years Ago.
The death by suicide several days ago
of Professor F. M. McElfresh at the Wal
lace fruit orchard, of which he was super
intendent, near Ealem. has aroused no
end of surprise and regret among the Ma
samas, by whom he was held In high
regard. Professor McElfresh It was who
performed a spectacular feat In saving
the life of a young woman who fainted In
a blizzard near the summit of Mount
Hood, in July, 1901, while the Mazamas
were scaling the big peak. With a fine
display of courage he offered himself as a
human sled, and with the unconscious
young woman. Miss Bethel Rawson. of
De Moss, Or., lashed to him, he was low
ered by ropes down the steep sides of the
peak iiy other brave Mazamas. It was
the only effective way of getting the
imperiled young woman down off the peak
and to safety. Professor McElfresh not
only devised the means, but volunteered
himself for the arduous feat.
The Mazama party was near the top of
the peak when Miss Rawson fainted from
exhaustion and exposure to a blizzard.
All other means of getting her off the
mountain, after efforts to restore her had
failed, proved unavailing, and Professor
McElfresh's ingenuity and fine courage
solved a difficult problem and made him
a popular hero. He declined to take any
credit to himself, however, and with a
modesty that was second only to his
courage dismissed his conduct as not unusual.
Dr. Patton Visits Harry Thaw.
NEW YORK, Sept. 10. One of the call
ers at' the Tombs Prison to visit Harry
K. Thaw was the Rev. Dr. Francis L.
Patton, president of Princeton Theologi
cal Seminary. The purpose of Dr. Pat
ton's call was not stated.
Collision on Brooklyn Bridge.
NEW YORK, Sept. 10. Twelve persons
were injured, one of them, probably
fatally. In a collision between two trolley
cars at the New York end of the Brook
lyn bridge today.
To Open Council Crest Line.
The Council Crest loop of the Portland
Railway Company will be opened Thurs
day, when a special car will be run over
the new road about noon. The Council
men will be invited to make the trip, and
the heads of the railway system will ac
company them. There will be no special
demonstration except the running of the
special car. Thereafter cars will run
every few minutes around the loop dur
ing the daylieht hours of each day. The
line affords a fine view, and after the
Crest Is more thickly .settled with resi
dences It may be expected that cars will
run on the same schedules as the other
suburban lines.
