' NEW YORK. Sept. 4. The death or Hermann Oelrlchs, which occurred on the North German Lloyd steamer Kai ser Wllhelm der Grosr., far out to sea, was due to Bright's disease. Mr. Oel rlchs died last Saturday evening at 8 o'clock. He was very 111 when he board ed the steamer, but his condition was not considered critical. Soon after the steamer sailed, however, his condition became rapidly more serious and on Thursday he was obliged to remain in bed. From that time until his death he sank rapidly and steadily. He was so 111 when he embarked that he was advised not to sail. He was conscious throughout and spoke Intelligently to his 'servant only half an hour before the end. On the day he sailed he cabled con gratulations to his brother, Charles, that being the latter's birthday. He also asked his brother to meet him with a carriage at Hoboken. The KuJser Wllhelm der Grosse ar rived this afternoon from Bremen and was met at quarantine by a tug, on board of which were Charles M. Oel rlchs and William K. Vanderbllt. The tug took Hermann Oelrlchs' body on board and it was placed in a casket. Following the receipt at Newport of the news of Mr. Oelrlchs" death. Mrs. Hermann Oelrlchs immediately left for this city, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. W. K. Vanderbllt, Jr. A family gathering was held later at the Bel mont Hotel. W. K. Vanderbllt, Jr., and Charles Childs. an old friend of the family, also being present. Mrs. Wil liam Jay. a sister of Mr. Oelrlchs, is in Paris, and a cable message was sent to her last niffht. The funeral will be held from the late residence. 1 East Fifty-seventh street, tomorrow at 1 o'clock, and will be private. UNION IN SECOND PLACE Cortelj-ou Declares Policy of Postal Department to Labor. WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 (Special.) The Postoffice Department today denned its attitude toward labor organizations in the service in a statement which says: "The Postmaster-General Invites atten tion to that portion of his last annual report relating to organizations of em ployes as the present position of the De partment, to be respected and enforced by all officials and employes of the ser vice. Especial attention Is invited to the concluding paragraph, reminding em ployes of their supreme personal allegi ance to the Government and of the over shadowing authority of the Department." The portion of the report referred to, after explaining that each individual in the service must be dealt with as such "and without regards to his affiliations with any organization," continues: "Organizations within the Department, to receive its sanction In any degree, must have for their object Improvements in the service, or be of the purely fra ternal benefit character. With any other purpose in view they are detrimental to the service, to their members and to the public." Burns Faction May Hold Meeting. WASHINGTON, Sept 4 In the Su preme Court of the District of Colum bia today, Justice Gould discharged the rule Issued against the Burns faction of the Knights of Labor requiring them to show cause why they should not be enjoined from holding a special assembly of the order in New York City September 10.
