ST. LOUIS, Aug. 23. (Special.) The
suit for divorce begun by Robert T. Stur
geon, assistant cashier of the Merchants'
Laclede National Bank, and a member
of one of the most prominent families of
6t. Louis has revealed a strange ro
mance. In which fate Intervened between
a young woman and the man she Intend
ed to marry and gave her another hus
band. A mistake In mailing two letters
changed the courses of three lives, and It
Is only now, after six years, that there Is
a chance the tangle will be straightened
out. A friend of Mrs. Sturgeon told the
following story today:
Two Leaders Among Suitors.
"Miss Amy Bay, a Virginia girl, came
to St. Louis In the late '90s and soon
made herself a social favorite by her
beauty and attractive ' manners, and
gained many admirers. Among the num
ber were Mr. Sturgeon and a young Louis
ville man, and these two were soon run
ning a hot race In the lead of others as
rivals for her hand. Finally, formal dec
larations came from both, and it was
necessary for Miss Bay to make her
choice.
Xotes In Wrong Envelopes.
"She decided In favor of the young
Kentucklan. She wrote to him a letter
of acceptance of his suit, the note being
written without superscription. She alBO
wrote a kindly letter to Mr. Sturgeon, ex
pressing her sorrow that she could not
return his love. This letter also did not
contain the name of the person for whom
It was Intended.
"Then It was that a mischievous fate
Intervened. She placed the letter to Mr.
Sturgeon in an envelope and addressed it
to the young Kentucklan, and the letter
for the Kentucklan was placed in the
envelope addressed to Mr. Sturgeon.
"Thereupon Mr. Sturgeon hurried to
Miss Bay's home as an accepted suitor.
The young woman, when she realised
what she had done, had not quite the
heart to tell Mr. Sturgeon of her mis
take." SQUEEZED IN THE FLURRY
Brokerage Firm of M. G. Sage & Co.
Compelled to Surrender.
NEW YORK, Aug. 23. The brokerage
oftices of M. G. Sage & Co., in this city
and in Jersey City, which suspended yes
terday, were visited today by a large
number of the patrons of the company
and its various agenlg in other cities, who
wanted to know what the company in
tends to do about settling its accounts. It
is said that the concern has 25,000 ac
counts to be adjusted throughout the
country, a large number of which are lo
cated along the route of their wires to
New Orleans, which it formerly operated.
According to one report, the losses
amount to $2,000,000. William Beverly, the
chief clerk of the company, "-as today
appointed assignee. The postal authori
ties today held up a quantity of the com
pany's mail in the New York Postofflce.
Assignee Beverly later said: "In check
ing over the accounts of M. G. Sage & Co.,
I And the liabilities about $330,000; assets,
$116,000, divided in different banks through
out the country."
Albert J. Adams, Jr., son of "Al" Ad
ams, the former policy king, said he was
the largest creditor and the chief loser.
Mr. Adams continued:
"The business of the company and the
extent of the failure have been greatly
exaggerated, and the total liabilities will
not exceed $350,000. I am confident that
if the creditors are" patient, they will be
paid in full." He said his father was in
no way connected with the firm.
Could Not Collect Margins.
NEW YORK. Aug. 23. The suspen
sion of the firm of Franklin & Billon,
members of the Consolidated Stock
Exchange was announced today. The
inability of the firm to collect addi
tional margins from customers after
the upward movement 'of the market
last week is reported to be the cause
of the suspension.
. A member of the firm today, esti
mated the liabilities at $100,000, and
assets at $30,000 to $40,000. He said
the firm hopes to compromise with Its
creditors and resume operations.
' Record Price for Exchange Seat.
NEW YORK, Aug. 23. A seat on the
New York Exchange was sold for $93,000
today. This is the record price for a
seat on the Exchange, and was reached
but once before.
MAKE DALNY FREE PORT
Open to All Nations for Trade With
Leased Territory.
' LONDON, Aug. 23. A cable dispatch to
the Japanese Embassy here explains that
Tort Dalny will be open to the business
of all nations, and that it will be a free
port for all exports or Imports as far as
the - Province of the Kwang Tung and
leased territory on the Liao Tung Penin
sula through Port Dalny are concerned.
Japan has also decided to permit ships
of all nations to engage In trade and
navigation between Port Dalny and the
various open ports of Japan from the
same date.
FIGHT MINIMUM RATE BILL

DETROIT, Aug. 23. The convention
of the Associated Fraternities of
America today adopted a resolution
pledging the association to fight any
attempt In any of the 39 state Legisla
tures that meet next Winter to pass a
minimum rate bill.
A resolution also was adopted ad
vocating a fraternal tuberculosis sani
tarium at Las "Vegas, N. M.
