MADRID. June 4. The populace of the
Spanish capital Is gradually recovering
Its composure, and the programme of
wedding festivities Is being carried out.
although the nerve-racking tragedy of
May 31 is likely to leave a lasting Im
pression on the royal family, as well as
on the people here.
The principal event today was the mili
tary review at Carabanchel camp, at
which King Alfonso and Queen Victoria
were present. The former, who wore the
uniform of a Captain-General and. who
was mounted on a handsome bay. gal
loped along the lines. His escort was
composed of officers of all nations in va
riegated uniform. Lieutenant U. S. Grant,
the American representative, being con
spicuous In the white Summer uniform
of the United States Army.
Honors to Bomb's Victims.
The Wadras regiment, which lost sev
eral of Its officers and privates by the
bomb explosion last Thursday, occupied
the post of honor and was enthusiastic
ally applauded. About 15.000 soldiers and
sailors participated in the review.
The tribunes occupied by the members
of the royal family, the Princes, envoys
and other noted personages were gor
geously decorated. Frederick W. Whlt
rklge, the American special envoy, and
Mrs. Whitrldge and their daughters, in a
vehicle drawn by four gaily caparisoned
mules, were among those present.
The military review was followed by
a musical competition this afternoon and
a gala ball tonight at the palace of the
Duchess Fenian Nunez, which was at
tended by the members of the Spanish
royal family and the visiting Princes and
envoys.
Measures Against Anarchy.
The newspapers of Madrid are confi
dently giving their attention to the need
of measures for the protection of so
ciety against anarchy, but point out the
difficulties which even the freest coun
tries, such as the United States and
France, have experienced in restraining
this element.
Members of the family of Manuel Mo
rales, the perpetrator of the bomb out
rage, are expected to arrive In Madrid
tonight. The burial of the assassin prob
ably will take place tomorrow in some
obscure place.
Morales Was a Degenerate.
MADRID, June 4. An autopsy has de
veloped the fact that Manuel Morales,
the would-be assassin of King Alfonso,
was a degenerate. He belonged to a
sect of anarchists believing In the cur
tailment of births and marriages to the
end that the rich might be deprived of
servants.
France Guards Against Bombs.
TOURCOING, France, June 4. Presi
dent Fallieres, who was accompanied by
Interior Minister Clemenceau and War
Minister Btienne. todny Inaugurated the
Industrial exposition here. Stringent po
lice precautions against anarchists were
taken.
DEATH OF JOHN C. NEW
Kepublican Leader of Indiana and
Holder of Many Offices.
. INDIANAPOLIS, June 4. John C. New,
for many years proprietor of the Indian
apolis Journal, died of dropsy at his home
late this afternoon. Around his bedside
were his wife, his son, Harry S. New,
vice-chairman of the National Republican
committee, and his daughter, Mrs. Brnest
H. Buford, of this city. Another daugh
ter, Mrs. W. R. McKean, Jr., Is on her
way here from her home at Omaha. Mr.
New had been sick for about a year.
' John Chalfant New was born at Vernon,
Ind., July 6, 1831, graduated from Bethany
College, Virginia, In 1851, and was admit
ted to the bar at Indianapolis in 1852. He
was Clerk of Courts of Marian County,
Indiana, in 1856, Quartermaster-General of
Indiana In 1861. and State Senator In 1S62.
After the Civil War he was a banker for
many years and has long been proprietor
of the Indianapolis Journal. He was ap
pointed Treasurer of the United States by
President Grant in 1875, Assistant Secre
tary of the Treasury by President Arthur
in 1SS2, and Consul-General at London by
President Harrison in 18S9. He was a
lifelong Republican and an intimate friend
of Harrison.
Sir Charles Tennant, British M. P.
LONDON, June 4. Sir Charles Ten
nant, formerly member of Parliament for
Glasgow, who was prominent in commer
cial and financial affairs, died today, aged
,73 years. One of his daughters Is the wife
of H. H. Asquith, Chancellor of the Kx
, chequer.

End of "Butcher-Knife Bill."
HELENA, Mont., June 4. Corbley lams,
known as 'Butcher-Knife Bill," an ec
centric character, was shot and Instantly
killed here Sunday, says a special from
Billings to the Record. Frank Devideo
did the shooting, claiming he acted in
self-defense. A Coroner's jury returned a
verdict to that effect, but Devideo Is be
ing, held In jail, and the County Attorney
says he will file an information charging
murder.
The tragedy was the culmination of
trouble of long standing between the men.

his 14-year-old daughter, and dying an
hour later. He leaves a widow and four
children. The cause for his act is not
known, but he is understood to have been
annoyed by creditors of late.

NEW YORK, June 4. A reception, in
which Democrats from all over the coun
try will be invited to take part, will be
tendered to William Jennings Bryan In
Madison Square Garden In this city on
his return from a trip around the world.
William H. Hoge, of this city, chairman
of the Commercial Travelers' and Hotel
Men's Anti-Trust League, today received
a letter from Mr. Bryan, written at Con
stantinople, "In which he accepted the in
vitation. It is expected that Mr. Bryan
will reach London In time fo speak at a
Fourth of July celebration and will arrive
in this city about August 1.
Heavy Rain at Bay City.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 4. Heavy rain,
accompanied by high winds, prevailed
here last night, and this weather pre
vailed throughout the northern portion of
the state. It Is 22 years, according to the
local Weather Bureau, since similar con
ditions were experienced at this time of
the year. Locally, the rainfall yesterday
was 0.20 Inch, making the seasonal pre
cipitation 20.37 inches. Comparatively lit
tle suffering was caused by the rain
throughout the refugee camps. They
were forewarned by last week's down
pour, and were in some measure prepared
for It.
Skull Crushed With Crowbar.
BRAWLBY, Cal., June 4. A man. sup
posed to be D. R. Harmsby, of Los An
geles, was brutally murdered here, his
body being? found yesterday. In common
with many others, Harmsby, on account
of the warm weather, had been sleeping
out in the open In the freight yards of
the railroad company. He was killed by
being struck several blows with a crow
bar. His skull was crushed, and death
must have been Instantaneous. Officers
are working on the case, but so far no ar
rests have been made.
