POLICEMEN SAVE HIS LIFE
JACK LEWIS UNCONSCIOUS FROM
GAS ASPHYXIATION.
Landlady Pronounces Him Dead, .but
K Price and Burke Restore Res
piration With Difficulty.
Jack Lewis, candidate for Chief of Po
lice at the Oaks, was a dead man for half
an hour yesterday and that his body was
not sent to the morgue is due to no fault
of his landlady.
Lewis, following a spree, went to his
room at the Appleton rooming house early
yesterday, morning: and before retiring:
turned on the gas, either by accident or
design. Later in the forenoon the fumes
of escaping gas attracted a chambermaid,
who notified the landlady, Mrs. Cox. The
two went to the room, saw Lewis lying
senseless, were unable to detect evidences
of respiration and pronounced him dead.
The chambermaid was sent to notify the
Coroner. She got the police station by
mistake.
"There's a dead man here who's com
mitted suicide and we want the Coroner
to come after him," ehe told the station
officer.
Patrolmen Price and Burke hurried to
the place in the patrol -wagon to investi
gate. At the door they were met by the
landlady, who said she did not want to
let them Inside, insisting the man was
dead and needed no attentions other than
those the Coroner could administer.
It being their duty to investigate suicide
cases, the two ofneera insisted upon going
Inside. When they reached Lewis' side he
was1 seemingly dead. Price, however, . on
making closer examination, thought he
detected life. He set about working the
man's arms up and down and got him to
breathing. Dr. Wheeler was then sent
for and after working over Lewis for an
hour, pronounced him out of danger for
a time, with an even chance of ultimate
recovery.
Lewis is 32 years old and unmarried. He
has been employed at the Southern Pa
cific yards for months, but recenUy re
signed on prospects of getting charge of
the police force at The Oaks. His pros
pects. In this Tespeot, did not turn out
so well as he expected and it Is said he
took to drinking. Whether he turned on
the 'gas with suicidal Intent or by acci
dent is a matter of conjecture. '

EXCEED THE ALLOWANCE MADE
FOR MAINTENANCE.
Surplus of Several Hundred Dollars
for the Fiscal Year Is
Reported by Clerk.
The receipts of the Municipal Court
for the fiscal year will exceed the cost
of operation by several thousand dol
lars and will show a large surplus over
the appropriation made by the City
Council for maintenance. Municipal
Clerk Hennessy made his monthly re
port yesterday, together with a report
of the receipts for the past 11 months
of the fiscal year. The total receipts
are shown to reach, the sum of 18,
895.40. The Council's appropriation for
maintenance of the court and City At
torney's department was 13,000. The
surplus to date is accordingly $395.40
with another month to hear from.
With this showing attaches of the
court feel that new furnishings ought
to be allowed. The present court fix
tures are sad relics of an ancient day
and are badly out of repair. The place
comes very near to being squaltj and
unsanitary and the lack of ventilation
Is a menace to the health of those who
are forced to be in the place any length
of time.
The receipts in fines, forfeitures and
costs for the past 30 days amounted to
$13.9.60, a slight decrease as compared
with last month. The receipts by
mouths follow:

HOME FOR REALTY BOARD
PROJECT IS STARTED AT BAN
QUET AT COMMERCIAL- CLUB.
C. K. Henry Subscribes First Five
Thousand Dollars for a Fine
New Building.
At the banquet of the Portland Realty
Board given in the Commercial Club last
night. C. K. Henry started a movement
which may lead to the construction of a
large office building, which shall serve
as the home of that organization. In
making his suggestion Mr. Henry said
that he believed that the board should
erect a handsome home on the same lib
eral lines which the Commercial Club is
following in its plans, and himself offered
to head a subscription list for the pur
pose with $5000.
The suggestion was received with loud
applause and cries of approval which
showed that the members are heartily in
sympathy with the movement, and it Is
probable that the project will be carried
through.
The banquet was attended by more
than SO of the most prominent dealers of
the city, and several representative busi
ness men. Parsons Orchestra furnished
music and the Goodwyn Quartet sang
during the evening.
