In the opinion of George K. Field, con sulting ensrinocr for the Rlsdon Iron Works, of San Francisco, but little cre dence should be given unofficial reports that the earthquake shock did any great damage to the buildings of the Bay City before the nre completed their destruc tion. Mr. Field, who is a guest at the Hotel Portland, has been with the Bisdon Iron Works since 1S93. and has superintended the placing of the steel work In many of The structures which remain standing in San Francisco. He has carefully examined the build ings not burned, and says the Call. 'rocker. St. Francis Hotel, Fairmount Hotel. Flood. Chronicle and Ferry build ings, in fact, most of the office buildings, are left in as good condition, as far as tiio structural steel in concerned, as they were before the earthquake and fire. He scoffs at the idea that the earthquake damaged these buildings, and declares that any building on a good foundation and built entirely of steel will stand almost any earthquake shock. Engineer Field is a stickler for good foundations. If any substantial Struc tures were disturbed by the temblor, he says, the blame should be laid to the made ground on which they stood. How the steel frames of the San Fran cisco buildings withstood the intense heat to which they were subjected has been a matter of wonder to many people. Mr. Field explains this by stating that the main steel supports of modern buildings are well sheathed in fireproof materials. Outside of a few minor beams, from which the temper may have been drawn, he believes the flames did but little dam age v the steelwork. Regarding rebuilding, he says: In three years the visitor to San Fran cisco will see but few sign of ths earth quake and fire. The United States Steel Corporation will furnish most of the ma terial for the new city and will supply steel In any quantity ana at specially low prices, if necessary. My firm is not taking any bin contracts as yet, but the people are not ready to begin the work of reconstruction until the insurance problem Is settled. Once they are paid their policies and se cure ready money the new San Francisco will Hue in a miraculously short time, more substantial than before. Ruruor Says "Oriental Limited" Will Be Run Between Chicago and This City. Dispatches to The Oregonlan from Chicago state that the Great Northern will place a solid train in service from Portland direct to Chicago. This news cannot be confirmed here, as represen tatives of the Northern Pacific and Great Northern know nothing of it of ficially. It would not be a surprise to local railroaders if this move were made, even before the Portland & Seattle Railway is built. It is almost a foregone conclusion after that time. It is reported that the Great North ern's crack train, the "Oriental Limit ed." will be placed in service direct from Portland to Chicago at an early date. This will afford a through serv ice east over the Hill roads that will equal in every way the accommodations offered over the Great Northeish from the Bound. The "Oriental Limited" cost the Great Northern il, 800,000 to build. There are eight trains continually on the road between the Sound and St. Paul. The train represents the acme of the carbuilder's art and is said to be the finest thing in railroad transpor tation in the Northwest. Pulled by an 160-ton locomotive, the "Oriental Lim ited" does 40 miles an hour with ease. With the advent of the Portland & Seattle Railway in Portland, new schedules to the East, with more fre quent train service from Portland, will be offered. The new road will have to make inducements in either equipment or speed to get the business to the East and it is said to be prepared to do this. From Vancouver to Kenne wick. the Portland & Seattle will have a. 5D-rolle-an-hour track. From Kenne wick to the East it Is to be doubted if the Great Northern will excel the Union Pacific tracks, as the latter is in a splendid condition, particularly after the Blue Mountains are crossed. From Huntington to Omaha, great speed can be made. Mike Roche's Little Joke. M. J. Roche, of the E. & R. G., who is perhaps the champion joker of Port land's railroad row, yesterday sent a tel egram to A. L. Craig, general passenger agent for the Harrlman lines, and J. H. O'Neill, traveling passenger agent for the allied lines, at Baker City, offering con dolences to them on the loss of their hats while in Pendleton this week. The message was prompted by a dispatch to The Oregonlan that the two lost their hats while attending the circus at Pen dleton, and were in the crowd when the circus ftnt blew down. Mr. Roche care fully signed the names of all the rail roaders on the row to the message, then sent it collect. - , . Special Excursion Rates Given. On account trt the annual meeting of the Oregon Pioneer Association in Port land on June 14. the passenger office of the Harrlman lines announces a one and one-third fare from all points on the lines in the state to Portland and return. A similar fare for the round trip from points on the O. R. & N. in Oregon. Washington and Idaho is offered to May vlile. Or., and return, on account of the reunion of the Rinehart family at that place on June 18, 19 and 20. Will Issue More Maps. The 1906 issue of the wall map of the States of Oregon. Washington and Idaho, which was printed and distributed by the Harrlman lines, has created such a wide demand that an order for a second edi tion will soon be placed. Already over 5000 maps have been distributed. The general offices are now preparing framed copies of the map for hanging in each station on the Southern Pacific and O. R. & N. lines throughout the State. New bulletin boards are being .sent out for each station on the affiliated lines, also. Charles G. Whitcomb Promoted. Charles G. Whitcomb, formerly a clerk In the offices of General Passenger Agent A. L. Craig, of the Harriman lines, has been appointed chief clerk of the New York Central office, and will commence work today. , He succeeds Joseph A. Boyce, who left to become soliciting freight agent" for the Great Northern. G. A. Emery, who becomes soliciting freight agent for the New York Central lines, will assume his new duties June 1. ALL TAKE A HAND. Tie closing out sale of fine pianos and organs at Eilers Piano House has at tracted most widespread attention. The big establishment is crowded every min ute of the day with people eager to take advantage of the great sacrifice. There are some who are inclined to think that things are a little slow since the San Francisco catastrophe. "Nonsense." Give people a genuine bargain in anything, and there are buyers galore to seize the opportunity.
