WANT UNFETTERED PULPIT Says Heretic of Today I the Or thodox of Tomorrow and Trial Should Be Postponed Twenty Years. If the church atooft for -absolute truth, honesty and RulleleMneBS, th recent trial of Rev. A. B. Crapeey, of Rochester. N. T would never have taken place. Such was the thought broug'ht out by Dr. Stephen 8. Wise, who spoke at the Tem Vle Beth Israel last night upon "The Uses and Dangers of Heresy-Hunting." Dr. Wise said that a heretic should not Tie tried for at least 20 years after tie had violated his ordination vows. He said that his heresy beliefs would then be or thodoxy. He said that heresy of today was' orthodoxy of tomorrow. He cited several Instances to substantiate his ut terances In this respect. Dr. Wise com mended the etnnd taken by Dr. Crapsey. but said that the minister who was tried iby an ecclesiastical Jury was Inclined to temporise. But he said that he was a man of courage and was truth-eteeking, and that he had his commendation and heart-felt prtase. Why He Was Tried. "Dr. Crapeey was tried, not in order to oD,i-tain wh.tii.r he hai nnoken some thing that was not the truth, but to de termine whether he had departed from the standards of church and sect," said Dr. "VVIbo. "The trial in itself was of lit tle Importance, but it involved rhe free dom of the clergy. It was a question of authority versus spiritual religion. "In October, 1904. the House of Bishops, assembled at Boston, Issued a pastoral letter asking that any minister who did not believe in all of the fundamental Kwdilngs of the church at least to be hijnest by remaining silent or by wlth lr3wln(t. Dr. Crapsey was not supposed 10 teach that whtch wu reflected, to him. by the lens of Biblical study. "Millions who read of the trial of Dr. (Vapsey undoubtedly said to themselves. OlT course, a minister pannot be expected to believe all that he preaches. The world does not believe that the ministry stands for absolute truth and honesty. Those who believe they are serving the church by refusing to reject outlawed supersti tions are In reality disserving the church. The church has no right to Impose upon a man ordination vows that make him out a liar when he speaks them or to be honest he must violate them. Creeds Xeetl Change. "They are not divine. They were made by man. ajid man oueht to be able to un make them. They should be flexible and pliable. The creeds ought to be changed If they ouht to be changed. Man cannot even lie for God. When a man lies for od he is reallv serving the devil. The greateM thing In the world is truth, and the meanest thing In the world la a He. Years ago it was heretical to believe that the universe whs not created In six days. Now a statement to this effect creates ridicule and brings forth our smiles. I am Just as much of a heretic as Crapsey 1.x in his own church. I do not believe in the infallibility of the Bible, but I know that It contains the deepest spiritual and moral truths." ROB BOY OF HALF-DOLLAR Oldor Youths Take Money From Davis McCamant., Wallace MeORmant's UMlo son Davis was held "up and robbed of 50 cnts and a gunmeta.1 cardcase near the McCamant Jiome. on Kins; street, early yesterday aft ernoon, by two larger boys. Davis yelled at th top of his lungs, but the. older boys varied a contribution to their circus fund and anew no mercy. Mr. McCamant made a complaint to the police later in the day. and the detectives are looking for two boys of the descrip tions Riven by the frightened youngster. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT.
