Mesler. Morris Condon. All of Portland. BT MARION MAC RAE. OREGON RBLJE1F BUREAU, Oakland, May 8. J. N. Teal, representing the Port land relief committee, arrived this morn ing and spent the entire day In San Fran cisco. In addition to making the rounds of the hospitals and the relief camp es- laDusnea oy tne Oregon Relief Bureau, jur. leai discussed affairs with Dr. Ifevlne, head of the Red Cross Society: General Greely and General Funston, but In spite of a hard day's work was unable to determine the best course for the Portland relief committee to pursue in expending the balance of the money now in us nanas. Tomorrow Mr. Teal will talk with Chairman Phelan and other prominent members of the San Francisco iinance committee. Cannot Describe Scene. like other visitors to the ruins of San Francisco. Mr. Teal was sickened and awed at the terrible sights he saw. He was In a measure prepared to see what had been San Francisco In ruins, but he was not expecting to see the devastation of the vast acreage over which the Are had spread Its fiery tongue. "It Is useless to attempt to express by mere words," said Mr. Teal on his re turn to Oakland tonight, "what a terrible calamity has befallen beautiful San Fran Cisco. There is no way to describe it. It la & sight one must see before comDre hendlng what a terrible thing has be fallen the city. Itelier System Perfect. "From conversations I had with Gen eral Funston and Dr. Devine, I am con vinced that the distribution of supplies has reached a splendid system, one which, as time passes, will become more perfect. In my talks with physicians I learn that there Is comparatively little sickness In the city. The sanitary conditions, 1 learn, are about as perfect as possible. There will be. I am told, no danger of ' disease breaking out It the people will follow Instructions and boll the water they drink." John Were Badly Injured. Testerday I told of the search of the death records for John Were. Today de veloped the fact that he is alive. Mr. Were walked into the Oakland head quarters, having heard that we were searching for him. He was frightfully injured by a falling chimney which crashed through the roof and landed on his neck and chest. He was dug from the ruins and taken to the emergency hos pital unconscious. His neck In still so badly Injured that he cannot straighten up and ho still suffers severe pains in his chest. Mr. -Were owes his life to the pillow upon which he was sleeping. He was furnished with some necessary clothing by the Oregon Relief Bureau. Courage of Portland Xurses. The courage and training of the Port land nurses stationed at the Presidio hospital were admirably shown this morn ing, when' a tire which destroyed the hospital laundry threatened all of the buildings. When the alarm was sounded. Dr. Marie D. Kqul, also of Portland, called the nurses together and ordered them to their stations. Quietly and with out the slightest confusion each nurse prepared her patients for removal from the wards and stood by ready to act when ordered. Fortunately the fire was checked and it was not necessary to re move any of them. While this was going on some of the Presidio nurses forgot their patients in their excitement and desire to save their personnl belnnsini?. WILD 0RGIEAJ SAKHALIN v Thousands of Drunken Convicts Burn and Loot Buildings. ST. PETERSBURG. April 22. Belat ed letters from Alexandrovsky Post, North Sakhalin, bring a wild picture tit the three weeks of murder and loot following the proclamation of peace and the evacuation-by the Japanese to the northern half of the Island. Th. wilder spirits among the prison ers, criminal and political, who form practically the entire population of Alexandrovsky Post, broke loose from all restraint, applied the torch to pub lic and private buildings, drank them selves into a wild fury and vented their passions in pillage and murder. Owing to the fierce October storms, the ships containing the troops dis patched to take possession of the island were driven off the coast, and Colonel ValyuyeR, the Military Gov ernor, landed with an escort of only 60 men, a scanty force with which to face hundreds of desperate convicts during the three weeks before fur ther troops were able to land. These convicts prepared a warm wel-. com for the new Governor, setting; Are the day he landed to the police headquarters and the great Alexan drovsky Post prison, 10 separata build ings, with accommodations for thou sands of prisoners. Tliaae were completely consumed, the Japanese having allowed the flra engines to become useless, but by the strenuous exertions of the Rus sian and Japanese soldiers, who worked side by side and patrolled the city to prevent further Incendiarism, the Are was Anally checked. ' The next day the Japanese troops returned, having first sold their ac cumulated stocks of provisions and liquor at Incredibly low prices. Casks of sak," ordinarily sold for 85. went for 10 cents, and cases of tinned meat, containing 76 pounds, 60 cents. One hundred and seventy-five tons of rice and buckwheat were disposed of in a lump for 1100. Everybody became drunk, and with provisions enough for the Winter and no necessity for work, many of tham kept up the debauch for weeks. To protect the city, with his little Harrison and the prisons destroyed.
