HAS PROOF OF REBATING
Garfield's Report Deal With That
Subject Alone and Forms Basis
for Prosecution of Rail
road and Oil Men.
WASHINGTON, May 3. The statement
! authoritatively made- that the Depart
ment of Justice nill immediately begin
en Investigation of the relations of the
oil trust and a number of railroads with
la view to determining whether there have
been violations of the anti-rebate law.
The basis for this investigation will be
the Information recently submitted to the
President in a report of Commissioner
Garfield of the Bureau of Corporations,
which is soon to be made public. This
report. It is learned, deals only with the
subject of rebates and does not go into
I he question of violations of the anti
trust law.
If it i found that rebates have been
given by the railroads and accepted by
the oil trust, steps will be at once taken,
it is asserted, to bring the matter before
the grand Juries in the localities where
the alleged violations took place, with a
view to prosecutions in the courts. It is
not thought that the Department of Jus
tice, in conducting Its Inquiries, will re
quire the service of any one outside of
the department proper and the United
States Attorneys and other officers under
its Immediate direction.
It is said that Mr. Garfield, in conduct
ing his investigation, traveled extensively
snd visited all important sections covered
by the operations of the oil trust, from
New England to California and the
South, and that the evidence obtained is
smply sufficient to warrant the Depart
ment of Justice in taking the course de
cided upon.
ASTOR-SHAW WEDDING.
Quiet Affair In London Church to
Avoid Clerical Objection.
f
'LONDON. May S. Mrs. Nannie Lang
home Shaw, of Virginia, and Waldorf
Astor, eldest son of William Waldorf As
tor, were quietly married at All Souls
Church, Langham Place, London, this af
ternoon, by the Rev. Francis Scott Web
ster, M. A., the vicar.
Neither William Waldorf Astor -nor
Mr. Danghorne. respectively the ' father
of the groom snd of the bride, were pres
ent, both beiit too ill to attend the cere
mony. . . ;
Only immediate relatives and Intimate
friends of the couple knew of the ar
rangements, so the congregation was
small. It included Ambassador Reid and
Mrs. Reid. Charles Dana GlbRon led the
bride to the altar, and the groom was
supported by his brother, John Jacob
Astor.
The newly married couple received
many handsome presents. Including the
beautiful Cliveden estate, which Mr.
Astor presented to his son with all its
contents as a wedding gift.
Mr. Astor also gave the bride a tiara
in which is set the famous San Sancy
diamond, weighing 53V4 karats and valued
at 175,000.
The groom's present to the bride was
a necklace formed by three rows of su
perb, pearls.
The object of the quietness of today's
marriage was to prevent its possible In
terruption by certain of the clergy of
London, who object to the marriage of
divorced persons in church, whether they
are the aggrieved party or otherwise.
One of these clergy had threatened to
interrupt the Astor-Shaw ceremony with
un objection.
