12 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1906. BIG'S MINE New Owners in Portland to Buy Machinery. SANGUINE ' OF RESULTS G. It. Harms and E. T. Staples Arc Confident That the Property "VV111 Prove a Big Moncy-3Iakcr. 4 G.t IL Harms, ol Bellevue, Ky., and E. tT, Staples, of Ashland. Or., owners of the famous Briggs mine, discovered in 3904 by the Briggs boys at the head of Tucker Creek, in Southern Oregon, are guests at olie Portland Hotel. Their visit to Port fland at this time is for the purpose of purchasing machinery for a sawmill and anachlnery for a 20-ton stamp-mill, which They will have erected at the mine Just 'as quickly as the heavy machinery can bo .freighted into the camp. Messrs. Ularms and Staples purchased the Brlggs mine over a year ago, and since then have been quietly at work developing the prop erty. Expert mining engineers have been employed to make a careful and exhaus tive research of the property, and from the Tcports of these engineers, Messrs. Harms and Staples feel confident that they will develop one of the greatest min ing properties in the state. Boy Discovers M.Jnc. The Briggs mine was discovered by Roy Briggs. an 18-ycar-old lad, who. like many boys in Southern Oregon, was devoting his lime to pocket-hunting for gold. He took S2S.090 out of his discovery in a few days, and the discovery was one of the greatest mining sensations in the history of the state. Like many of the mines discovered in Southern Oregon, it was believed that Ooung Briggs had only found a very rich SockeL Mr. Staples, who is a practical miner, visited the scene of the discovers, apd being convinced the mine was not only a pocket, entered into negotiations for the purchase of the property. The doal was consummated about a year ago, and $100,000 was paid to the Briggs family tor tho mine. Just as soon as the trans 6r was made Mr. Staples and Mr. Harms and those associated with them in the deal began making extensive preparations for developing the property. They were convinced that the mine contained a true vein of free milling quartz. A drift was started, and after going abqut 200 feet, they crossed a big vein. It is 18 feet between walls, and thy are convinced Ihat by going an additional 100 feet, they will reach the ricli gold chute. Buy Machinery in Portland. All of the machinery' both for the saw mill and for the stamp mill will be pur rliased in Portland, notwithstanding the lact that the prospectors have been sought after by San Francisco firms, who wished to equip both plants. Mr. Staples said yesterday at the hotel he could see no reason for Oregon mine-owners going to San Francisco and Chicago for their mining machinery when they could buy (machinery just as cheaply in Portland. "We came here a couple of days ago just to buy the machinery for our plants, and as soon as the purchases are made, Mr. Harms will return to his home in Ken lucky and I will go to the mines and push the work of erecting the saw and stamp mills. We have about 5150,000 in vested in the mine already, and a great deal moro will be spent before we get in working order. Among the things which wo shall do first will be to construct a road, and this alono will cost over 55000. Real Mines, Not Pockets. "Another thing which we shall do when .the mine gets to working will be to con vince the old wiseacres of Southern Ore pop that there arc real mines in that sec lion of the country, and not only pockets, as has been the common talk. I know better that this, not because I am part owner in the Briggs Gold Bar Mine, but (because I am thoroughly convinced that 5t is a fact. I look forward to additional fjreat discoveries of mines in Southern Oregon, and lake my word for it, during fthc coming year you will see greater ac tivity in mining in that section of the (state than ever before. Oregonlans have been frightened off by the harpies who Siave wailed about pockets, but Eastern men with money are not .to be frightened, and arc going into Southern Oregon and investing their money in mines. I was in the East last Fall and met a great many mining capitalists, who were sending min ing engineers into that part of the state. 60 far, miners have only rushed over the country. Now they are settling down and are cleaning up tho pockets when they rflnd them, and are prospecting with more care." "I came out to hear the reports of the men who are developing the mine,' said IMr. Harms last night, "and I must say .that their reports have exceeded my most sanguine expectations. We haven't had much to say about what wo were doing with the property, but we have been pushing the work with great vigor. The machinery we bought here will be taken into the mine just as soon as the weather will permit. I am satisfied with the prop erty, and even more so with Oregon and Its great climate. Southern Oregon is go ling to be a coming country." CHECK IS STILL REFUSED St. Johns Hotel Company Holds City to Its 'Resolution. Mayor W. H. Kins, of St. Johns, who was instructed to return tho $1000 check deposited by the SL Johns Hotel Com pany, for a liquor license, made a tender of the check to the company yesterday, but it was refused. Attorney W. G. Mc Garry. for the company, made a demand on the Recorder for a license on the basis of the resolution passed by the Council some time ago promising to issue a license. The St. .Johns Hotel Company lias its building completed, and fixtures have arrived, preparatory to opening out this evening. However, it is not believed that the company will undertake to open this evening in defiance of the city. Manager Nye has repeatedly said that lie did not want any trouble with the city, and so informed City Attorney Greene yesterday, but he did not say that suit would be started. Jt may be that in order to "make a test the company will open out and then permit the city to start the legal fight. Councilman Shields contends that the company has no hold on the city through the resolution, even If it were passed le gally, which he contends it was not. It was simply passed at the time to show the good will of. the Council, he says, and was not in the nature of a license to the company and because the company has seen fit to interpret the resolution as a license does not make it legally so. Mr. Shields said last evening that he did not think there would be any. lawsuit, but that the whole liquor question would be fought out In the April election. Law -Students Elect Officers. Wednesday evening, February 7. the class organization of the class of '05, law department. University of Oregon,, at its weekly meeting elected the following class day officers to represent the law department at the graduating exercises In June: Valedictorian, C Ben Ricsland; class orator, Richard McCann; toast mas ter, G. T. Treadgold; class prophet. Archie Leonard; class historian, Edwin Minor; class poet, Abner H. Jones; mas ter of ceremonies, E. O. Stadter. The class of '05 has been very active in its attempts to build up the law depart ment of the university, which, situated as it is in the very center of a perfect sys tem of courts, has the best facilities In the Northwest for the pursuit of the study of law. The nature of this year's class-day ex ercises has not been definitely settled, but it is likely that after tho bar examination in June, a programme will bo given and a banquet will close the school year. Dr. Smith was passing and was summoned through a window by the old man, and the physician had to break into the room, where Bunting "was, alone and in a serious condition.
