"I thought I sent you to the County Farm," said Municipal Judge Cameron yesterday morning, when Jim Hill was brought out and arraigned on' a charge of roaming the streets "after hours." "Yer Oner, I "wuz ordered to go, and I started out," Jim replied, "but I'd ruther ye'd set up gallows fcr me." "Why did you return?" asked Dqputy City Attorney Fitzgerald. "The road was too rough." said Jim. "How far did you get?" asked Judge Cameron. "Oh. I guess about to the city limits," replied Jim. "Well, what arc you going to do now?" asked the Judge. "Work fcr an honest llvin', as usual." said Jim. "I have alius earned my llvin' und will keep ut up." "Yes, but you come in lierc one day and go out the next; you do not earn a living and you are making too much trouble," said Judge Cameron. "Tho County Farm is the proper place for you, and you've got to go there." . "I thought, Ter Oner, that slavery was abolished in 1SC1," drolly replied Jim. "Yes, the farm is the place for you, Jim." said Judge Cameron. "Whut gpod am I there?" queried Jim. "I can't milk a cow. fcr I've tried ut. and I'm no hand on a farm; I like the city." "I'll give you this one chance,"" said Judge -Cameron. ''You will go -to the County Farm, or serve 90 days in jail. I can't afford to have you.comlng in here every day or so." Jim Is expected to return to court In a few days. "I will not decide that a woman Is dis orderly or a vagrant simply because an officer says so, or because they have been beforo me in the past, especially when they swear they have reformed." de clared Judge Cameron, In announcing his decision in the cases of Bertha Hayward and airs. Clenn Brown. "The testimony must be absolutely complete and convlnc ing in such cases to bring conviction." Tho two women were arrested by Act ing Detective Kay in John Conrad's sa loon, -and the only evidence that they were 'disorderly was that giv.cn by Kay. Both defendants swore that they had re formed. Rosa Van Vlect. arrested by Patrolman Galbralth, was very obstinate and angry, and refused to answer any question. She admitted that when "mad" she used un printable language, and Judge Cameron fined her $50. She was charged with being drunk, but pleaded not guilty. "When taken to headquarters "Wednesday even ing, she nearly tore down the jail, and at last had to be shackled by Tdatron Sim mons to keep her in check. Joe Stutt was fined $25 for permitting Myrtle Cox, aminor, to enter his saloon nnd purchase liquor therein. The young woman was taken into the place by a fireman. She was sent to her home in Dallas. Herman Schroedor was fined $40 for vio lating the 1 o'clock closing ordinance by keeping open his saloon at 475 TV imams avenue, until 1:40 A. M. He had pre viously been fined for a similar offense. "Miller, charged with larceny from the person, was sent to the City Jail for ten days for contempt of court. He was angry because his case was continued. ana used profanity.
