Jan. 1L Fearing for their lives at the hands of highbinders, several well-known Chinese merchants have sought protection from the police. "With in the last few months they declare the organization has grown with rapid strides In Chicago, and now numbers more than 1000 members. Every mer chant in Chinatown of any conse quence has, it is said, been recently threatened with harm unless 3ic joins the ranks. They say at least 20 mer chants who have refused to become members have been told unless they reconsider their action they will be forced out of business. Some have Tjcen threatened with violence and even death. Castro Will Sell Asphalt lake. NEW YORK, Jan. 1L According to pri vate advices received from Caracas, Pres ident Castro will offer for Uc to the highest bidder -the concession for the asphalt lake Guanoco, of which the Xcw York & Bermudez Company was deprived about a year and a half ago.
