How a Seattle Bridal Couple Were
Greeted by llend.
FRIENDS of Nathaniel Clarke, clerk at
the Hotel Portland, will be surprised
to learn that he Is at last taking h,ls va
cation. Some persons may be Inclined to
look upon this Item as a joke and not be
Heve that the unexpected had really come
to pass, but it nevertheless Is true that
lr. Clarke Is absent from his post of
duty on a two weeks' vacation.
Missing his cheery face behind the desk,
friends of Mr. Clarke inquired for him
yesterday afternoon. They were dum
founded to learn that he would not bo
back for some time. Early last Fall, just
after the close of the Lewis and Clark
Exposition, Mr. Clarke announced he
would go to New York on his vacation.
Ho kept putting the date off and changing
his place of destination until his friends
were led to believe that his vacation was
a hoax.
Inquiry at the Hotel Portland yesterday
elicited the information that Mr. Clarke
had gone "below." This meager informa
tion was all that could be obtained of
the whereabouts of Mr. Clarke. Some of
his friends Interpreted "below" to mean
that he has gone to Calif ornla, and oth
ers think he Is at home, "below," In the
cellar, splitting wood.
WW. WOODWARD, a toller in one
of the largest banks in Seattle, is
a guest at the Hotel Oregon, in company
with his bride. Mr. and Mrs. Woodward,
who were married in Seattle a few days
ago, are enjoying their bridal tour. Their
friends say that Immediately after they
were married thye came to Portland to
spend a few happy days together undis
turbed. But it happens that there, is a bunch of
Seattle young men at the Oregon Hotel,
having laid over in Portland to spend the
money they won on the football game on
2ew Year's, and they have done their
revel best to make things "pleasant" for
Mr. and Mrs. Woodward.
The young couple had not been at the
Oregon for more than a few hours before
their names were discovered on the reg
ister. The next morning when the two
went down to breakfast congratulating
themselves they had not been detected
they discovered their table beautifully
decorated with flowers as would become a
wedding breakfast. Since then they have
been showered with attentions of all de
scriptions, and as a result they have be
come quite conspicuous, which was the
very thing they tried to ward off. To
make the affair all the more amusing is
the fact that not until last night did they
discover who had been so attentive to
their wants. The Seattle friends had paid
the bills for the extra attentions, but
managed to keep out of sight.
Last night Mr. Woodward rang for the
beniioy, and instead of one of the serv
ants appearing one of his intimate Seat
tle chums responded. They met In the
dark hallway, but Woodward recognized
his friend, and then the whole bunch was
called in. -It Is said Mr. Woodward was
much relieved to find out who had been so
kind to him and his bride. Both Mr. and
Mrs. Woodward are prominent In Seattle
society.
