ALL MILLS MAY BE CLOSED
CHINESE BOYCOTT SEVERELY
FELT OX PUGET SOUXD.
Fw Orders Arc Received From the
Orient and One Big Plant
Is Already Idle.
TACOMA, "Wash., Jan. 9. (Spe
cial.) Instead of waning, as has boon
frequently reported, the Chinese boy
cott is becoming stronger, and if orders
are not soon received from the Orient
the large exporters of flour on Puget
Sound will have to close their plants
and the loss will be enormous. This Is
the opinion of some of the managers
re Vi ijrr5t flnur mills companies
in this city. I
The Tacoma Grain Company's plant,
having a capacity of 2000 barrels a
day. Is idle, while the mill of the Puget
Sound Flouring Mills Company, with
capacity of 1S00 barrels, is grinding to
supply the local trade, after having
been shut downfall of last week.
The Tacoma "Warehouse & Sperry
mills is running today. ,but not
grinding to All any Chinese orders.
Where the flour companies were for
merly receiving orders from China f,or
100,000 barrels of flour they are now
getting orders for 10,000 sacks, and
these arc coming Infrequently.
"The boycott lias paralyzed the flour
business in China," said John D. Arm
strong of the Tacoma "Warehouse &
Sperry Mills. "According to our ad
vicos, the boycott is getting worse in
stead of better."
These three mills depend on the ex
port trade. Less than S per cent of
their output is consumed at home. The
Siberian market is pretty well sup
plied with flour, a number of cargoes
being on the way there now. and as
Japan is not buying as heavily as at
the close of the war, China is the only
large consumer left. The boycott has
practically killed the flour trade there.
John T. Bibb, manager ot the Tsf
coma Grain Company, said that his
company had not an order on the
books, and when the mill will start
again he does not know. The last
cable that the Tacoma Grain Company
received from China, Mr. Bibb said,
stated that the boycott is getting
"worse and worse." On receiving this
word Mr. Bibb sent a cable, asking If
a reduction in the price of flour would
result in getting some orders. The
reply was negative.
Halph B. Smith, of the Puget Sound
Flouring anils, says the boycott is
more serious than globe-trotters and
others returning from the Orient say
it is.
