12 THE aCOKN'ISCx UKKCHXTOAN, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1905. PUT ON AUTOMOBILE LIKE RESIDENTS OF TjATJREIAVOOD HAVE POOR CAR SERVICE. "Water Power Company Will Xot Give Proper Service, So They "Will Tlichisclvcs. Residents of. Laurelwood, a suburban township on the JJents branch o the Ore gon "Water Power & Railway Company' line, are talking of installing a flve-mlnute passenger service of their own in opposi tion to the present company. The pro posed measure that is expected to relieve the residents of that district from the poor traffic conditions now prevailing is the installation of a line of automobile carricttcs, which will be owned and con trolled by the people of that locality, who arc planning to finance such a deal. The proposition embraces the purchasing of ten of these vehicles, which are capable of carrying 24 passengers comfortably. These will furnish an adequate service, which may be Increased as the traffic de mands. A resident of Laurelwood, when seen last evening, stated that the proposition has been talked over for some time, and at the meeting of those interested in the promotion of the onterprise, held yester day. It was definitely decided to go ahead with negotiations for the purchase of the vehicles. Similar enterprises of this kind are in operation in the vicinity of Los Angeles and other places, and are said to be suc cessful In everj" respect. Such a line Is expected to afford a wel come relief from the Irregular service now furnished them by the present company, for it will mean a flve-mlnute service to and from the city. In addition to abolish ing the overcrowding of cars, -which-! means comfort while in transit. The automobiles are also expected to make better time than do the Jerkwater trolley cars now operated on that run. OREGON TREESJN AUSTRIA A. F. Miller, or Selhvood, Ships tbo Seeds of Fir and Spruce. A. F. Miller, of Sellwood. yesterday made a shipment of 750 pounds of the seeds of fir and spruce trees to re plenish the depleted forests of Austria. 3"lie seeds are put up In double sacks end went direct to their destination. This consignment represents several months of seed-gathering by Mr. Miller Jn the mountains near Mount Hood, and when the seeds reach their desti nation they will be planted to grow young fir and spruce trees to again be transplanted covering about 2000 acres. One thousand pounds were wanted, but these were all that were gathered. About COO sacks of cones -were picked from young trees, frojn which the seeds were carefully taken. Between 200 and 300 pounds of seeds were sifted from the whole bulk that did not promise, only the very best being sent across the sea. Oregon fir and spruce are growing on thousands of acres of territory in Germany and Austria that had been denuded of trees. Mr. Miller has been gathering seeds of these trees for. sev eral years. He says that the fir is the most popular tree and the seeds are eagerly sought for, the demand oelng greater than can be supplied. The fir, he says. Is considered the best all-round lumber tree In the world. Carnegie Gives Away $100,000. NEW YORK. Dec. 15.
