BUSINESS 3IEX'S EXCURSION TO
START TUESDAY.
AH Ava liable Space In Special Train
Has Been Taken for
the Trip.
t
An enthusiastic meeting o the com
mittee in charge of the promotion of
the business men's excursion to South
ern Oregon was held at the Commer
cial Club yesterday, and the greatest
satisfaction was expressed that all
preparations have been completed, and
the affair promises to be the most suc
cessful enterprise of the kind ever at
tempted on the part of the local busi
ness interests. With but few excep
tions, the entire subscription list has
been paid up and everything" is U?
readiness for the start, all that remains
to be done being- the arranging of a
few minor details. Secretary Tom
Richardson wears a smile that will not
come off when the subject of the ex
cursion is mentioned, for he has been
laboring hard in the past few week
in the endeavor to make this a suc
cess, together with the members of
the oommlttee. headed byH. I. Pittock.
The business men responded to the call
with a zest that Insured the success
of the enterprise from the very start.
The excursion leaves Portland next
Tuesday. November 14, starting
promptly at noon, and will stop at all
the principal towns In the Willamette
Valley and along the route through
Southern Oregon. The excursionists
will arrive back in the city Friday
evening, November 17. In time to take
up the thread of their business on
Saturday. Applications for accommo
dations on the excursion are still com
ing in, but as all the berths have been
taken, the only chance late comers
have to make the trip at present is for
some of those who haVe accommoda
tions reserved to drop out.
A few minor changes in the Itinerary
of the trip in the matter of arriving
and departing from one or two towns
have been made, but It does not affect
the general route.
Investigating Timber Frauds.
District Attorney Manning is contin
uing the investigation of the charges
against J. W. Gardner and W. H. Mc
Crossen of fraudulently locating people
on timber lands. The District Attorney
Is proceeding on the theory that informa
tions may be filed against the accused for
obtaining: money under false pretenses.
In such a case there must have been a
false token In writing. Miss Minnie Har
ris, a saleswoman at the store of Lip
man, Wolfe & Co., who paid McCrosscn
$150. was examined as a witness yester
day, and also George F. Bauerlin, who
was defrauded of 5125. There are many
others who will testify.
