"WORKING ON PUBLIC ROAD
SOUTH OP SALEM.
John Cauthorn Was Sent Up From
Umatilla County for Rob
bing a Store.
SALEM, Or.. Oct. 25. (Special. John
Cauthorn, a convict employed on the pub
lic roads south of Salem, ran away this
afternoon and has not yet been caught.
He was brought to the prison last May.
from Umatilla County, where lie was
convicted of robbing a store. He was
sentenced to serve two years. He was
put to work on the road two weeks ago
and gave no trouble until today, when
lie took advantage of an opportunity to
secrete himself in the brush and run
away.
Officers are in search but do not expect
to find him tonight. Cauthorn Is 35 years
old, of medium height and medium com
plexion. The only striking feature is a
large cut scar above the left temple.
Sixty-five convicts have been worked on
the road for over six months and there
liave been but three escapes. One pris
oner was re-captured, leaving two at
large, including Cauthorn.
ASK OFFICERS TO MAKE IT UP
Guardsmen "Would Settle Quarrel
Between Captain and Major.
SEATTLE, Oct. 26. (Special.) Men
prominent in National Guard circles are
"busily engaged today in attempting to
"bring about an amicable settlement of
the trouble growing out of the angry col
loquy that occurred between Major Case
and Captain Inglis. of Company D, on the
rifle range at Orlllla, Sunday. A strong
attempt will be made to have the two
men settle the trouble between them
selves. A court-martial, it is believed, would be
bad for the Guard. It is felt that a court
martial would result in so much hard
feeling that one or the other would leave
the organization, much to its detriment.
Adjutant-General Drain Is In Seattle,
and has made a personal investigation of
the matter. He treats it lightly, declar
ing that It was due to a loss of temper.
He is desirous that the matter should be
cropped. Knowing tho Adjutant-General's
reelings in the matter, several of the offi
cers of the Guard are using their in
flucnce to bring the quarrel to an end.
