all Jocal Democrats and through him It
was possible to block political .scheming
directed against Democrats. No charge
has, ever been made that he allowed
secrets to leak from his office and there
being no other way to get rid of him,
he was sent to a climate he could not
stand.
It is said In Jeffereonvllle that the
methods employed in 'getting rid of Cap
tain Upperman will be brought to the
attention of those higher In authority
than the Quartermaster-General.

A HIGH BOOST AND A STRONG ONE POR "PORTLAND DAY"
WITH EVERY PURCHASE OP $5.00 OR OVER, DURING THIS WEEK, BEFORE 6 P. M. OP" SATURDAY NEXT, MADE ANYWHERE IN
THIS GREAT STORE, WE WILL GIVE THE PURCHASER, ABSOLUTELY PREE, A SOUVENIR TICKET GOOD POR ADMISSION TO THE
EXPOSITION ON "PORTLAND DAY." MERCHANTS WHO ARE BOASTING OP "LOYALTY" AND BUYING A HALF DOZEN, A SCORE, OR
EVEN A HUNDRED OR TWO OR A "THOUSAND" ARE INVITED TO MEET THIS PROPOSITION. OLDS, WORTH AN & KING LED THE
LINE BY A PURCHASE OP 2000 LAST FRIDAY. IT'S A "FREE-FOR-ALL, AND ENTRIES ARE OPEN. COME ON, "PATRIOTS," BOOST
"PORTLAND DAY."
Men and mico may differ as to methods; different roads may be chosen by several
individuals and firms, but all are working toward one goal and that goal is marked by a
number that reaches above 100,000 as the rocord of attendance at the Exposition next
Saturday, "PORTLAND DAY." We wouldn't give much for a man (or a firm) that
didn't have a mind and a backbone of his own, and moral stamina to back it up. We
admire a man with an opinion, and sufficient backbone behind it to see it through,
even though he differs with us. We believe the best way to boost Portland Day is for
every Loyal Merchant With Civic Pride in His Breast to keep "open house" on that day for
the reception and care of the city's visitors. To show our guests Portland at its Best
With All Flags Flying and Wheels Revolving. Show Them Real," Live, Everyday Port
land With Its Hum of Industry, rather than Portland closed and gone on a picnic. Sup
pose some grand dame should be giving a big garden fete, and issue invitations far and
wide, the country 'round, for her friends to come and they came, arriving tired, duty from
travel, and fatigued. They go up to the door that leads into that hospitable mansion
owned by their hostess, and containing many grand sights, try the latch, but Find the
Door Locked Against Them. "You can go out into the g-den as you are, and roam to
your heart's content, but you can't go in the house," says the hostess. "Wouldn't that
jar yon?" Exactly what some business men of the city, with selfish aims in view, ask
Portland's foremost stores to do. Play the unhospitable host? Never!
THIS, PORTLAND'S LARGEST, AND LEADING STORE WILL BE OPEN ALL
DAY NEXT SATURDAY, "PORTLAND DAY." Extra attractions will be offered, vast
and magnificent merchandise displays arranged, stupendous style expositions planned, AND
THE MOST UNPARALLELED BARGAIN CARNIVAL CONDUCTED EVER KNOWN
IN WESTERN STORE HISTORY. We shall offer unprecedented opportunities for peo
ple to save all the expenses of their trip by the savings we shall make possible to all who
participate in the monster sale. Matchless special values will be made that will smash all
previous records in Portland store history. Out-of-town folk may rest assured of finding
Portland's foremost and best store wide open all day. Its free phones, information
bureaus, lavatories, writing desks, water founts from which spring the cold and sparkling
waters of "Bull Run," rest room and every convenience that a big modern store affords.
This will be Liberty Hall, WELCOME,, whether you wish to shop or not If you come
prepared to do the Fall buying we shall be prepared to save you your expense money for
the day or more. Suit yourself. WELCOME ANY WAY YOU COME.
