NEW YORK. Sept. 20. Nothing In the news
which became public today would account ade
quately far the reversal of speculative senti
ment from yesterday's depression. Bat the
rebound in prices wan an effective demo nitra
tion of the rV!llener. of the market from
pressure. It proves the amertlon heard gen
erally In the neighborhood of the stock ex
change that the floating supply of stocks Is
scarce and professional bear traders find dif
ficulty In covering their short contracts, con
siderable lines of abort contracts were put out
yesterday and the buying to get back these
etocks probably was most responsible for to
day's advance.
The spectacular advance In a umiiea num
ber of stocks Is not convldng evidence of a
widespread demand in the market In general,
and comraUalon-houtea continue to complain
that the outside demand la scanty. Holders
cling to their stocks, however, and nothing
r-eeats effective to dislodge holdings, except
the actual withdrawal of credit by wnicn tney

The most notable movements of the day
were traceable to individual influences. Re
ports of Important developments In the North
ern Securities settlement were revived ef
fectively In connection with the approaching
annuat meeting of the Great Northern and
the Northern Pacific The rise In that group
of stocks stimulated some sympathetic strength
m other railroad shares. The revived, strength
of Canadian Pacific was due to reports of
proeperouo conditions which have served be
fore to lift that stock. Rates for foreign ex
change rose decidedly away from the gold Im
port point. Time money ratt were called
somewhat easier, but call loan sales were held
firmly at above 3 per cent.

dominated during the first hour of the market.
At the start, however, the market was barely
steady, clear akles in the Northwest having
a depressing effect on values. Opening quota
tions In December were a shade lower to a
shade higher at 88 at Sic. Pit traders were
disposed to roll and with little apparent sup
port the market eased off. December selling at
8349. Later a leading bull became a
buyer and there was a quick change In senti
ment generally. Offcrlpgs dwindled with sell
ers more or less held in check by the atti
tude of export newsc News of a bullish
character tended meantime to bring out de
mand from shorts. Minneapolis reported ex
cellent Inquiry for flour and added that farm
ers deliveries of wheat were beginning to
fall off. A Kansas City record-breaking ship
ment of breadstuff were reported. An a cli

cable from Yokohama, stating that the price
of barley In Japan Is expected to be strongly
maintained. Increased excitement In the local
barley market, as It gave odor to reports
that the leading exporters are arranging to
make heavy shipments to the Far East. The
shorts are badly ecared. December barley
ran up to $1.07 and $1.08 was paid for
choice spot feed. Wheat options advanced
sharply following Chicago's rise, but had
small reaction from the top polar. Cash wheat
was quiet but steady. Oats were strong. New
bayou beans sold al $4.15. AH feedstuffa were
very firm, with an advance of 50 cents In
bran, middlings and rolled barley. Choice hay
Is tending upward.
Hops are quiet at the recent dedlnc The
crop Ls turning out welL
California wool 1? dull. Buyers find asking
prices of growers too high, and there Is no
business.
Improvement In the peach market was
checked by large arrivals of wrapped sleek
from Northern California. Table grapes are
in much larger supply, and. aside from fancy
shipping grade, prices are weak. The first
cornlesona of the season arrived and sold at
$1. Oregon cranberries are quoted at
higher range, say $998.50. owing to the ar
rival of fancy goods. Valencia oranges are
