FILE LIBEL CHARGE
St, Johns Town Troubles Up
to District Attorney.
SEEKING AN INDICTMENT
Mayor King: and Councilman Peter
son Give Evidence Want Coun
cilman J. II. Black In
dicted on Libel.
The quarrol between residents of St.
Johns, Mayor King and members or .the
Council of that place regarding the grant
ing of a license for a saloon has reached
the District Attorney's ofilce, and Mr.
Manning is now investigating a charge
of criminal libel preferred by Mayor
King and Councilman Peterson against
Joseph H. Black. Mr. Black is alleged to
liave stated that Mayor King said if he
could got Councilman J. H. Shields to re
sign his seat the license for a saloon
would be granted. Blacky is further al
leged to have made the statement that
Mayor King said In the presence of oth
ers that a certain amount of money
would be given if Shields could be gotten
out of office, and this statement was said
to have been made in the presence of City
Recorder Hanks, and further that Coun
oilman Peterson had arranged to be a
silent partner with Tom Cochran in a
saloon If the license was secured.
Black is also alleged to have stated that
"Mr. Laggett asserted that these charges
were truo. Mayor King and Councilman
Peterson pronounce all these charges as
false, and want District Attorney Man
ning to Indict those guilty of circulating
such stories.
IzAXD- TITLE MUCH CONFUSED
Daisy B. Knnpp Seeks Clearing of
Property Conflict.
To quiet title to two acres of land in
City View Park Addition, Daisy B. Knapp
has sued the Savings & Loan Society, of
San Francisco, in the State Circuit Court.
In her complaint, the plaintiff recites that
on November 29, 189C, the land was deeded
to her, Richard B. and Minnie Knapp, in
consideration of J5000, and by inadvertence
the boundary lines were Incorrectly des
cribed. This, she says, was corrected by
a second deed executed October 30, lSOO.
Mrs. Knapp further alleged that the
Savings & Loan Society, In 1S96, fore
closed a mortgage against Richard B.
Knapp for 51SG.48S, and the property men
tioned in the mortgage was sold for only
$174,&87, leaving a deficiency Judgment.
Taking advantage of the wrong descrip
tion in her deed for the two acres of
land, she avers the Savings & Loan So
ciety caused an execution to be levied
against it on the deficiency judgment
held against Richard B. Knapp, and bid
In the two acres for $50 at Shorlffs sale.
She subsequently redeemed the property,
but says the company still claims title
to it, and she asks the court to cancel
any such claim.

Richard H. Keogan says four of his ribs

the platforms, when the plank slipped,
and he was precipitated 30 feet to some
rocks below.
