Seventh and Wnahlniftoa Suropean Plan 1ST KEEP RECORD Sale of Poison by Druggists to Be Regulated. T0JVI BARRETT MUST WORK Man Who Neglects His Wife Is Told That the City Jail Awaits Him If He Does Not Do Better In Future. A man purchased- carbolic acid at the Brooke Drug Company's store, G7 North Third street, for May Smith, who wished to take her life by swallowing- poison. Testerday morning Deputy City Attorney Fitzgerald sent an officer to tiring the record of the store and the keeper of It into the Municipal Court to ascertain the name of the buyer. The clerk was unable to read his own writing; was utterly at a loss to make out the name or to tell to whom he sold the bottle or for what pur pose. It is the belief of Mr. Fitzgerald that thorc is a general disregard by druggists of the law which requires them to keep 'complete records of all poisons sold, and he Is considering the advisability of con ducting an investigation of the records of every drugstore in the city. He also states that he bellevos some member of the Police Department should be detailed to have charge of the records, and to make an examination of each one at stated intervals, to make sure the law Is complied with. May Smith would not tell who the man was who made the purchase for hor, and as It could not be learned from the rec ords, the officials are unable to take fur x tlior aotlon. Mr. Fitzgerald Informed the clerk that he was almost liable to prose cution for the manner In which he kept the record of the sale of carbolic acid, hut did not file a charge against him. A warning was given that readable records must be kept hereafter, or arrest and prosocutlon will follow. May Smith Is an Inmate of the Senate saloon and of the house overhead, run by "Liverpool" Lizzie Smith. The woman made two attempts Wednesday night to commit suicide, and was arrested by Po liceman Galbralth. She was given 20 days yesterday on a charge of vagrancy. Three hours were consumed in hearing the testimony of witnesses in the case of Mrs. Donaldson against M. M. Marks, charged with running a nol?y and dis orderly saloon and keeping it open after hours prescribed for closing In the morn ing. He was discharged. There was considerable evidence to show that a riotous assemblage heldt forth there Sunday morning, August 24,' but ten policemen from the celebrated Upshur-street station rallied to his sup port and swore that the saloon was a model of order; that quietude reigned su preme there and that never a bit of trouble has been raised there. A man was robbed of a sum of money in the establishment recently, but none of the policemen mentioned that. It was shown that Tom Barrett was about "the limit" for a husband, when his case was called. He was charged with vagrancy. He married a 15-year-old girl three years ago. She Is now the mother of two children, one aged nine .months. She swore that Barrett never supported her; that he treated her In a shameful manner; that he spent his earn ings with others; that be neglected the babies; that he did not see the last child until It was three weeks old and that when ho first saw It, he was drunk and nearly dropped It on the floor as he picked It up out of the cradle. One of the chief complaints against Barrett was that last Sunday ho "butted In" on his wife and two other women and took their classes of beer from them at Bohse Park, a drinking and dancing resort, Judge Cameron thought Barrett was a bad one, and told him he must' go to work or be put in the City Jail. Barrett decided to work. Charlie Daw, arrested for running a Chinees lottery game, was fined 520, and others arrested for being in his estab lishment on Seventh and Gllsan streets, were .fined $10 each. Law is the Chinese who made the statement several months SHOWING C. W. KXOWLES, Mjrr. Streets, Portland, Oregon. $1.00, $1.50, $2.00 per Day. ago that he was running his place under the protection of a policeman, who called himself Joo Smith. Insurance Agent Was Too Slow. CORVALL1S.
