Following a shower in the forenoon, the weather turned warm again and it is probable thaj: the low temperatures of the last few days are over for the present. If the weather settles, orders are to go out for fresh Inspections with a repetition of the salting of the gutters. Among the IWt of stricken today are two physicians, making four in all who have succumbed. The latest victims are Dr. J. T. Wolf, who lives below Canal street and has had a large practice among the yellow-fever patients in that quar ter, and Dr. L. A. Meraux. health officer of St. Bernard Parish. Both were un doubtedly infected by stegomyia while moving among their patients. As to the Gulfport Infection, Governor Vardaman, of Mississippi, today said that It came from Mississippi City, and that Mississippi City got It from New Orleans before the quarantine was put on, due to the fact that the authorities here acted in bad faith in concealing the fever. A controversy of large proportion? is ex pected to develop as to who has been culpable. The shipment of fruit West through Port Chalmette was successfully launched to day. The steamer Estrapa arrived, bringing 50,000 bunches of bananas. Ono hundred screened frolghtcars awaited the fruit.' A second steamer, the San Jo, Ib due hero on September 1 with a similar cargo, and it JIp probable the steamers will come regularly from now on. The resumption of the fruit business will en able many of the stranded Italians to obtain employment. The annual reunion of the United Confederate Veterans is also to be held here next year, but at a very much earlier date. The number of new cases has hovered around the same ilgures for three days. Magnetic bargains are scattered all through the stocks on all four great floors. They are all legitimate reductions in price, brought about by the powerful motive that actuates the final, drastic August clearances the determination that OLDS, WORTMAN & KING STOCKS SHALL 5E FRESHEST AT ALL TIMES And most desirable. And August clearances persisted in are depended upon to do this at this season. A big million-dollar stock isn't set to rights with a whisk or two of the blue pencil as though a mantelpiece were being dusted off. Fancy the strag glers and laggards of a great army. The bargains told of are the stragglers and the laggards of Summer stocks that we find in tho final "roundups." Staple goods are included, too, but without regard to that, they and the stocks of the waning season OFFER SAVINGS THAT RUN TO LESS THAN HALF PRICE With sufficient frequency to say: Pome expecting more safe bargains in good mer chandise than you may look for again in months. Home From New York With All That's New From Paris Miss Bernard, Mistress of Portland's Largest and Foremost Suit and Wrap Salons 6tylcs is aitreat when told by so interesting a personage as our interpreter of correct fashion Miss Bernard. SHE REPORTS FROM PARIS that "Empire Style shall rule in women's coats. We had an early and authoritative hint from our Eastern headquarters that the "Em pire" (three-quarter) style, and Empire effects would rule this fall in women's coats. Collarless styles are much in evidence, as a rule in collar effect with velvet in har monizing tones. Tue chief newness in sleeves is the long cuff. Full puff sleeve at top leg-'o-mutton stj'le is correct; but the cuff is extremely long as is the new cuff on the new Fall waists. Almost to elbow; either in folds or plaits of self, often with turnback of velvet and trimmings of silk braids. And with the word of as sured style, we followed with making generous purchases that enable us to offer two for every one garment shown by any other local house. Choosing here is generous; no need to pick from a dribbling of doubtful styles when one may come here and select with assurance of absolutely correct fashion from such a plenitude of gar ments as exists nowhere else west of the largest Chicago houses. And They Keep Coming More New Goods for Our Grand Salons Arriving Every Day. LADIES' NEW FALL SUITS The new arrivals in suits embrace all the correct styles of the season ind in every fashionable color. They are made in the extremely popular Redingote long-coat style; also blouses and Etons and a very pretty style with 27-inch loose coat. These come in broadcloths, serges, Panamas, homespuns, mannish mixtures, Prunel las, cheviots, etc; to suit every fancy and every purse. Prices from $12.50 to $150. FALL COATS AND WRAPS Long Coats, Short Coats, Automobiles and All the Best. Our advance showing can best be expressed by the words of one privileged to see the goods on display: "It's simpry wonderful." No other store hereabouts attempts to approach our display either in magnitude or qualities. The coats consist of overy late style, long and short, made of the season's newest materials, in all the wanted colors, such as purples, greens, gray mixtures, reds, olives, tans and black. Prices range from $6.50 to $85.00. , Children's Colored Wash Dresses At Half Price In Baby-to-MUs Snloas. "Winter goods are coming: In very early this season, and we need room for them.
