EXPIRES IN DEATH VALLEY
Brother of Harry Bethune, "Well
Known Montana Mining Man.
BULLFROG, Nov.. Aug. 28. Judge L.
Bethune, brother of Harry Bethune, of
Butte, Mont., a well-known mining ex
pert and promoter. Is supposed to he dead
In Death "Valley. Mr. Bethune, who was
well advanced In years, while here a
month ago declared his intention of going
to Kandsburg by way of Death Valley.
James C. Weller, father of Earl C.
"Wellor. of Tollurlde, Colo., who was
searching for the body of his son, says he
found a black mule' straying around a
waterhole about half a mile north of
Surveyor "Wells. A pack outfit which gave
evidence of having fallen off the animal
was lying a short distance away and a
Bible and some letters marked with
Bethune's name wore found among the
effects.
Eagles Play Water Baseball.
ABERDEEN, Wash., Aug. 28. (Spe
cial.) The Fraternal Ordor of Eagles of
Gray's Harbor held a monster picnic Sat
urday and Sunday at Westport, The
Eagles are always presenting novelties
for the amusement of the crowds who
attend their entertainments, and this
year they adopted an experiment In base
ball playing . which has probably never
had its counterpart, Floating bases were
placed In the bay at "Westport and the
opposing nines took turns in standing
upon these floating rafts.
When a ball was hit into the water the
batter had to swim to his base and the
player into whose territory the ball
floated had to swim and get the ball
and pwlm after the player if he desired to
put him out. Five innings were played
and the novelty was witnessed by many
hundreds of persons.
