QUICK FERRY
Consolidated Will Build ftoad
Immediately to Shaw's
Island.
SERVICE TO VANCOUVER
By Means of Bridge nnd Trestle and
Island, Terminal Time Will
Be Shortened to Half
an Hour.
Specifications will be completed in a
few days ready for beginning actual
work on construction of the new line
of the Portland Consolidated Railway
Company-from the north end of Union
avenue to a point a few hundred feet
west of the east end of Shaw's Island,
where the new ferry landing for the
Oregon side of the Columbia is to be
constructed. "When completed a 30-mln-ute
service to "Vancouver can be main
tained as easily as a 45-mlnute serv
ice at present.
The Improvement has been in contem
plation for some time previous to the
sale of the property to the Seligman
and Clark Interests, and the estimated
cost lb $100,000. George L. Estabrook,
of Philadelphia, and M. S. Hopkins, of
Columbus, O., representing the new
owners, who have been making a thor
ough examination of the property and
Investigation of conditions for the pur
pose of formulating policies and de
termining upon improvements that
should be authorized, decided that this
construction should be completed with
out delay. Mr. Estabrook last evening
authorized the official announcement
that the line would be completed this
Tall.
Right of Way Arranged.
Right of way has been arranged for
through the Love tract and the Force
claim, two donation land claims that
were,among the very early acquisitions
from the public domain on the penin
eula, which embraces practically the
entire distance from the north end of
X'nlon avenue, where the line now
swerves to the east passing through
TVoodlawn, to the original bank of the
Columbia River, at the edge of what Is
novr snown on the map as Columbia
Slough. There will be a stretch of
grade across this land, after which the
track will be carried on treetle.
That the company Is building for
the future is shown by the fact that
the oonstruotion will be almost as
Sieavy as that for steam railroads. The
trestle will be of the four-plle-to-the-"bent
variety, much heavier than the old
tlestle. The track will be laid with 60
pound standard rails, while much hea
vjer feed and trolley wires will be used.
It wili be a single track with probably
one turnout. Including the slough and
Island portion there will be about the
same amount of trestle as on the pres
ent line, the total mllegae of the road
ivlll be greater, but ttlere will be a
great saving in facility for faster run
ning of cars and Quicker time for the
ferry.
Will Construct Fine Bridge.
The arm of the river will be crossed
by a bridge of at least two spans,
"which will rest upon cylindrical steel
piers, concrete filled, carried up from
piling, Just as are the piers of the
Portland bridges across the Willam
ette. The structure will be a combi
nation steel and frame that will last
a great many years. Beyond the bridge
the track will skirt the shore of the
Island to a point a few hundred feet
from the cast end where the ferry slip
will be located and a good roadway
will connect to the bridge and thence
to the highway of vehicle travel be
tween Portland and Vancouver.
Where the landing will be located is
almost directly opposite Vancouver
and where there is always sufficient
depth of water, thus doing away for
all time with the necessity for annual
ly dredging that has been an expensive
condition of the present terminal on
the south bank. The running time can
be easily reduced when the new line
Is completed to 30 minutes between
Washington street and the Vancouver
landing as compared with 45 minutes
at present. The ferrj- can make rapid
trips between the two landings and
the capacity of the line will be thereby
greatly increased upon demand.
LONGEST THEATRICAL RUN
V
Kolb and Dili Break the Record nt
the Mnrquam.
The longest run In the history of local
theatricals will come to an end tonight
when the Kolb and Dill engagement will
terminate with the double bill, 'The
Skindicate" and "The Kindergarten."
Clarence Kolb and Max Dill with their
splendid company came here eight weeks
ago practically unknown and have broken
all records for continued popularity and
were it not for previous engagements
to the contrary they could Just as well
have extended their stay another month.
They have caught the popular fancy so
unmistakably that many of our theatre
goers have gone again and again to see
them in the same bill.
"I. O. U.," their best vehicle, is in
every respect a high grade musical farce.
"The Beauty Shop" is not so attractive
but in such clever hands It becomes an
excellent entertainment while the double
bill which they have used at the fag end
of their engagement is funny and in spots
tuneful.
Kolb and Dill are themselves splendid
German dialect comedians, better in many
respects than Rodgera Brothers and In
the main equal to Weber and Fields In
their palmy days. Ben Dillon has few
superiors In Irish comedy work and is
the best possible foil for the Joint stars.
Edith Mason, the prima donna, has
completely won Portland and will here
after rank as one of our most popular
soprano's, while Tom Persse and Char
lotta Vidot are assured of the warmest
kind of a welcome when they return.
Much credit Is due the chorus, one of
the most efficient we have ever had In'
this city. ,The girls sing and dance well,
they know how to wear pretty clothes
and are equal to the best In the busi
ness for good looks. '
Kolb and Dill have done wonders here.
They have made a lot of money for them
selves and the Marquam management
and have lined up the local public as few
companies have ever done. Their clos
ing performances will take place this
afternoon and tonight.
