THE HORNING OREGONIAN, "WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 1903. LICE CULL IT Welcome B. P. O. E. to The Meier Frank Store IE GUNNING Theory That Death of Mrs. Van Dran Due to Madman or Jealousy. 16 CORONER'S JURY'S VERDICT Detectives Working on Mysterious ..Murder, but Report Z"o Clews Have Been Found to Fix Guilt for Deed. VERDICT OF CORONER'S JURY. We. the Jury, find' that the deceased. Minnie Van Dran, came to her death about 10 o'clock Saturday evening, August 12, 1905, at her residence, 23 V4 North Seventeenth otreet, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon; that from the evidence the Jury finds that the deceased came to her death from drinking a portion of a glass of gln gerale. which contained large Quan tities of cyanide of potassium. "When, how. xrhere and by whom said poison was placed In the bottle Is to this Jury unknown. If Mrs. Minnie B. Van Dran was mur dered by the administration of poison, the foul deed was perpetrated by a man's insane cunning or the devilish jealousy of a woman, according to the statement of Chief of Police Gritzmacher. In this connection, one of the latest a'nd most significant facts brought to the attention of the police Is that, for some time. Joe Young has been acting as though mental ly unbalanced. He Is the man whd re cently shot Van Dran, for which he is now under heavy bonds to appear in the Circuit Court to stand trial. No light was thrown on-the mystery by the inquest held by Coroner Flnley yes terday morning. The Jury simply found that death was due to poisoning. Ex pert witnesses and relatives were ex amined, but the crime was not fixed upon any person. Chief Grltzmacher stated yesterday aft ernoon that he 'would have the case thoroughly Investigated before tho matter was dropped. At present Detectives Day and Vaughn are assigned to it They claim to have been unable as yet to se cure any tangible clew, or to establish any motive sufficiently strong to impel mur der. This morning the body of Mrs. Van Dran will be taken to Albany. Or., where she formerly lived. Burial will take ptaco there. Funeral services will bo hold In the Presbyterian Church at 2 P. M. The Coroner's Jury comprised the fol lowing: J. H. McBride. W. L. Higgins. H. S. Dunston, R. Lemon, C. S. Sliver. A. B. Stuart. Deputy District Attorney Moser conducted the examination of wit nesses, assisted by Coroner J. P. Finley. Dr. L. Victoria Hampton, being called to the stand, swore to having made a chemical analysis of the contents of the glngerale bottle, and of the stomach of Mrs. Van Dran. In the bottle she found a solution of cyanide of potassium, and in the stomach hydrocyanic acid, the change from cyanide of potassium occurring through the operation of the acids in the Btomach. Drs. Mary E. Parker and Marie D. Equl. who assisted in the analysis,' gave testimony of a similar nature. There could be no doubt, both witnesses swore, as to the presence of the deadly poison, in largo quantity. When Frank J. Donnelly, an employe of the Pioneer Sodawater Works, took the stand he was asked to name the in gredients used in making glngerale. He did so. but no such thing as the poison that killed Mrs. Van Dran is ever used in its manufacture, he wore. They use no cherry laurel water, either, he said. Kasper Van Dran, husband of the dead woman, lost control of his emotions sev eral times while relating his story of the case. He told the jury of the pleas ant relations existing between himself and wife, and of the last time he left her at home; of bolng summoned 15 min utes later by telephone, and of reaching the house to find his wife lying on the floor dead. When asked if he knew who put the poison In the glngerale. or If he had any suspicions, he said he did not know, and that he suspected no one. Miss Minerva Monteith. sister of Mrs. Van Dran, related what has already been published concerning the drinking of the glngerale at the Van Dran home, and how Mrs. Van Dran cried out to her not to drink any of It. as there was something dreadful in it. An Instant later, witness swore, her sister fell dead on the floor. Witness had no idea who put the poison in the glngerale, but thought at the time It was a mistake of the bottling works. F. R. Chase, one of the bartertders at Van Dran's saloon, swore that no one but himself. Van Dran and the other bar tender had access to the glngerale chest It is said by those who are in a position to know that it would be an easy matter for a person who so willed to pour poison Jnto a bottle of glngerale and replace the cork. MAY SOLVE THE PROBLEM Property-Owners on East Stark Pro pose Roadway Be Rebuilt. It is now proposed to meet the difficulty in making expensive fills on East Stark street between Tenth and Twelfth by re constructing the old derated roadway in this street. The' wreck, or what is left of the elevated roadway, still stands, bar ricaded, but it is now said this roadway can be reconstructed at small cost, com pared to making fills, and made to stand half a dozen years or more. This road way was built about 12 years ago, but has been closed up for three years. When it was first proposed to improve East Stark the matter of repairing the old elevated roadway was considered, but was discarded, as it was then thought a fill could be made without confiscating the property. If the city will assist In repair ing the roadway the question of Improv ing East Stark street may be settled. DAYLIGHT DOWN COLUMBIA. On "T. J. Totter," Queen of Hi vex Boats. Don't Miss It. T. J.
