JOE DRY'S TEMPER Chief Saved Staff Detective From Third Trouncing. FOUL LANGUAGE IN STATION Constable Lou Wagner Assailed, for Complimenting Day on Capture of Salt Lake Kid Fight Is Narrowly Averted. Joe Day, tho champion foul-mouthed man of tho Pacific Coast and at present drawing a salary from the city as a member of the headquarters staff of de tectives, would have been thrashed for the third time within tho post few months right in the central station yesterday morning had not Chief Grltzmacher ap peared at the crucial moment to prevent It. Constable Lou Wagner, of Justice Reid's Court, clashed with Day, because the latter applied language too vile for pub lication toward him. Wagner merely asked a question of the city's servant and In reply was grossly insulted. Words nearly led to blows, but Chief Grltzmacher emerged from his private of- flee, attracted by the disturbance, and re quested Day to calm himself. Although the Chief probably did not know It, he Is said to have saved Day from a trouncing, as Wagner had already warned Day that he would punch his face. It was the stream of foul language, flowing from Day's Hps, that brought tho Chief out. Although it was pretty serious for a time, the incident also has Its laughable side. Day has been under fire for some time, and although he denies bejng dis turbed, he Immediately explodes when twitted concerning criticisms. This was what brought about the altercation be tween him and Wagner. It appears that Day has been reading The Oregonian, and keeping tab on its published lists of bunco men. grafters, touts and other characters Infesting the city. In the issue of Thursday, th6 name of the Salt Lake Kid appeared. Day Im mediately started out. It seems, to find "Kid." Success crowned his efforts yes terday morning, and Day proudly marched Mr. "Kid" to headquarters. Constable Wagner happened to be pres ent, and recognized Day's prisoner. "Oh. got him. at last," remarked Wag ner. "Suppose you saw In The Oregonian yesterday the "Kid" was here. Where did you get him?" "You are a nice, good fellow, of noble ancestry." was not tho exact reply given by Day. Things continued until Day and Wagnef nearly fought Had they done so. It Is said, the probability Is Day would have gone at least on a brief vacation. Wagner afterward remarked he wos rather glad he did not "lick" Day, as the latter was thrashed not long ago by a man at the Hotel Portland, where for years Day got free room and board, and was later struck over the head with a chair by an enraged man. to whom he had applied most foul language. Day presented the Salt Lake "Kid" to the Chief, who Instructed him to leave town. APPOINTED CHIEF SURGEON Former Portland Boy Receives High Position In Mexico. Dr. A.
