Loss of Stores Forced Retreat to Get Baldwin's Supply Open Water Prevented Explorers From Reaching the Pole. TROMSOE. Norway, Aug. lL-The re lief stcamor Terra Novo, whloh rescued Anthony Flala and the other members of the Ziegler Polar expedition, arrived here today. She sailed from Tromsoe June 14 last, shaping her course direct for the icefields, -which -were encountered June 29 In latitude 76:97 'ncfrth: longitude 36:6 east. The condition of the Ice favored the ship and she proceeded eastward along the edge of the field until June 27. when she commenced to force hor way through the floes and on July 25 struck open wat er. Thick ice was again encountered the following aay. but on July 2S, Palml Island was sighted and on July 29 the Terra Novo reached Cape Dillon, where she found six mombers of the expedition safe and well. From this outpost men were dispatched to notify Flala at the headquarters camp of the arrival of the xescue ship.- Could Not Have Lasted Long. The Terra Novo reached Cape Flora July 20 and found nine members of tho expedition. These had become weakened by tho hardships they endured and some of them were so ill that they could not have held out for another Winter. Re turning to Cape Billon, Mr. Champ, who commanded the relief expedition, organ ized a party and started for the head quarters camp, from which he brough back Mr. Flala and his comrades. The Terra Novo sailed for home Au gust 1. She got out of the ice-pack Au gust C and returned In excellent condi tion. Tho members of the Ziegler expedition tell a stirring story of the vain efforts to reach the pole. In the severe weather in November, 1903, the ship America, which carried tho expedition, broke up and the provisions and coal were lost. Part of the wreckage remained until January 22, 19M, when it disappeared during a strom. The loss of the provisions was seriously felt and, but for the stores left by the Baldwin-Zlegler expedition in Teplltx Bay, the men wbuld have been In bad straits. Vain Effort to Reach Pole. In the following Spring continued at tempts wore made to the eastward to force a passage to the pole. The condi tions, however, were insurmountable. The expedition met with much open water and day after day encountered fresh dan gers and difficulties. Ultimately, the sup ply of provisions began to give out and a painful Journey southward was begun, the members of the expedition finally reaching the depots at Cape Flora, Cape Dillon and Camp Ziegler, among which tney were distributed, and where they managed to eke out the limited supplies with catches ,of walrus and bear. FIALA WILL SOON BE WEDDED Arctic Explorer Became Engaged on Day- He Sailed. NEW YORK, Aug. 1L News of the res-, cue pf Anthony Flala. head of the second Ziegler expedition In search of the North Pole, yesterday, caused the announcement by his family in Brooklyn of his engage ment to Miss Clara Puryear, of Nash ville, Tenn. The Southern girl promised on the day Fiala's expedition sailed to be his bride, but the engagement was kept a secret pending news of his return. The explorer first met Mias Puryear eight years ago when he visited Nashville with a troop of Brooklyn cavalry, which took part In the New York day ceremonies at tho Tennessee Exposition. Announcement was made yesterday at the office of the late William H. Ziegler in this city that the members of the Mala party will be brought back to this coun try and sent to their homes. When that has been done no further attempts backed by the Ziegler estate will be made to reach the North Pole, as the executors have no desire to continue the work of Arctic exploration. The gentleman was very busy explaining things as they took in the sights, and was con stantly looking 'round for something new to amuse the children, and evidently thought he had found it when he espied a rather attractive entrance with the sign "EXIT." Taking his wife's arm and hurriedly "shooing" the children ahead, he exclaimed: "Come on, Jane, we'll see what's in the "'Exit" It may be hartuy worth while to mention the fact that the over-curious geritleman was compelled to pay 10c a head to get into the grounds again.
