DAYTON'S BODY IS FOUND
ABOUT HALF A MILE FROM
PLACE OF DROWNING.
Frank Freeman Plunges Into Surf
at Seaside and Brings the
Remains Ashore.
SEASIDE, Or., Aug. 7. (Special.) The
body of Miln Dayton; -who was drowned
here Friday, was recovered this morning1
at 11:30 o'clock, after having been in the
water three days almost to the minute.
This morning Frank Freeman and his
brother Darrow, of Portland, were on the
beach near the mouth of the Kecanlcum
River, shooting at marks, when Frank
noticed what looked like a log rolling in
the surf and was about to take a shot
nt it when he saw it was a human body.
He at once plunged Into the water and
brought the body to shore.
Word was carried to the Hotel Moore
and a team was sent to get the body.
The word spread like wildfire and a large
number of men, women and children
hastened to the place where the unfortu
nate young man lay on the sands about
half a mile north of where the drowning
occurred. On the arrival of the wagon
the body was taken to Gordon's cottage
where it was prepared for burial.
Funeral services will be held here to
morrow at 3 P. M., and will be conducted
by Rev. Dr. Short, of Astoria. The re
mains will be taken to Portland on the 5
o'clock train and will be buried from
Holman's undertaking parlors Wednesday.

QUARREL OVER RACEHORSES
Joseph Thomas Shoots William Mor
rissey at Roseburg Fair Grounds.
ROSEBURG, Or.. Aug. 7. (Speclal.)-Ex-clted
by drink and angered because some
racehorses in Ills care were taken away,
William Morrissey attacked Joseph
Thomas with a pitchfork at the fair
grounds here this aftornoon. In self-defense
Thomas used a revolver, shooting
Morrissey just below the left clavicle, the
ball lodging in the shoulder, making a.
dangerous wound.
Thomas surrendered himself to officers,
Morrissey refusing to swear out a com
plaint. Both were horsetralners.
Run of Salmon in Lower Harbor.
ASTORIA, Or.. Aug. 7. (Special.)
There was a decided Improvement in the
run of fish in the lower harbor on the
flood tide today and the seiners on Sand
Island did better than for some time, one
of them getting 12 tons in two hauls. The
other seiners on the island secured from
three to five tons each.
In Baker's Bay and outside traps also
did well, their catches averaging from one
to three tons each this afternoon. The
Inside traps, however, did nothing. As the
glllnetters fish only at night on account
of the clear water, the size of the new
run or spurt cannot be determined until
they report tomorrow.
