Worms Can't Stakd Saltpeter. J. C.
Rassmussen, a farmer and berry raiser
living on the Base Line Road, says that
the army worms are not so thick In that
district as in the Columbia Slough coun
try, but there are more than enough. Mr.
Rassmussen has had some experience In
defending his crops against the ravages
of these pests. Mr. Rassmussen recom
mends saltpeter diluted In water to save
cabbage, tomatoes and other green vege
tables from the worms -when once they
get Into the garden. Put a tablespoonfuj
'of saltpeter Into about two gallons of
water, and then sprinkle the heads ot
cabbage with the solution, and the worms
will not eat the cabbage.
Child Travels Across Continent.
Xiucllle Wooddy, 10 years old. Is on the
way to Portland from Mena, Ark., to
make her home with her aunt, Mrs. C. H.
McCullough, 954 Williams avenue, and Is
expected to arrive today. The little girl's
father died in June, her mother having
died some time ago. It had been ar
ranged that she should make her home
with Mrs. McCullough on the death of her
father, and she wrote her aunt that she
was Intending to start. However, Mrs.
McCullough did not know when to look
for the child to arrive until he read In
The Orcgonlari that Lucille had left Kan
sas City, and will watch for her little
niece.
Whipped bt Former Husband. Mrs.
Augusta M. Hayes, of 505 Dekum avenue,
whose face and body are badly beaten
as the result of a whipping administered
by her former husband. Joseph Hayes,
Thursday night, was taken to Bt. Vin
cent's Hospital yesterday afternoon from
the woman's ward In the City Jail by
orders of Assistant City Physician Slo
cum. On the advice of Chief of Police
Gritzmacher. Mrs. Hayes swore to a com
plaint against her former husband, charg
ing him with assault and battery and a
warrant was Issued for his arrest.
Called to Silvebton. Rev. Albs'n Es
son, pastor ofthe Rodney-Avenue (Alblna)
Christian Church, has accepted a call to
the Christian Church, of Sllverton. Mr.
Esson has been pastor of the Rodney
Avenue Church for the past four years,
and has been successful In building up
the work in that field. He has already
begun his work, and is assisting in evan
gelical work in Sllverton. Mr. Esson has
many warm friends. His main work at
the Rodney-Avenue Church was in paying
off a considerable debt and making needed
Improvements. ,
Ministerial, Convention Opens. At
the' city" of tents, the annual Evangelical
Convention camp meeting opened at Jen.
nlngs' Lodge yesterday with a sunrise
prayer-meeting. In which all those on the
grounds took part. Regular services
were opened at 9 A M. In the large tent.
"The Bible Meaning of Baptism and In
filling of the Holy Spirit" was the topic
by Morris Heverllng. Rev. Theodore
Shaur, of the Portland German Church,
gave an exposition of John xi:7. In the
afternoon and evening revival services
were conducted.
Demands Damages. W. H. Cruse, a
minor, by his father. L C. Cruse, has
commenced suit in jthe East Side Justice
Court to recover $a damages and costs
from George Underbill. It Is alleged in
the complaint that TJnderhlll owned a
pair of unbroken bronchos, which he
hitched to a wagon and placed in charge
of an Inexperienced boy. While in charge
of the youth the horses ran away and
collided with a horse owned by the de
fendant, damaging the animal to the
amount sued for.
New Bond Election Xot Considered.
Mayor W. H. King, of Si. Johns, said
yesterday evening that there had been
no consideration of holding a new bond
election in the near future, as has been
reported. The Mayor hopes that the
present municipal bonds will be taken
by the Chicago bidders, and is awaiting a
reply from them. "I have not said any
thing about another bond election." said
Mayor King, "and have no Idea where the
report originated."
Was Member or Multnomah Camp.
The body of Conrad Wintersteln, who
was accidentally killed near Arlle, Polk
County, was brought to Portland yester
day, and will be sent to New York for
Interment He was a member of Mult
aomah Camp, No. 77. East Side. His
death was caused by being dragged 2001
yards by a goat, having a rope fastened
around his wrist and" being unable to
extricate himself.

Young Girl Disappears. Maude Rust,
the 16-year-old daughter of Mrs. J. Rust,
living at -426 Grand avenue, took her de
parture from home a few davs ago with
out her parents' consent She left a note
saying she was going to California. Her
mother thinks she is In hiding somewhere
about the city and intends to wed a man
who lives at Ockley Green, on the Pen
insula, when opportunity offers.

Business Science Club. A club with
the title, "Business Science Club," was
organized last night at the Alisky Hall,
with about 50 members. The following
were elected officers: President, R. L.
Da r row; first vice-president, W. H. Be
harrel; second vice-president Ira F.
Powers; treasurer, H. J. McAfee; secre
tary, i, H. N. Clausen; directors, W. P.
Olds. H. G. Colton, I. Gevurtr. F. E.
Beach. H. D. Kllham, W. D. Palmer. The
club Is organized for the purpose of fur
thering the interests of education In
business and helping to elevate salesman
ship to rank with the professions.
Inspect Klamath Project. F. H.
Newell, chief engineer .of the United
States Reclamation Service, and George
Y. Wiener, consulting engineer, passed
through Portland last night on their way
to Kamath Falls to Inspect the Klamath
project. They will meet several other
prominent engineers there and possibly
Governor Pardee, of California, and Gov
ernor Chamberlain. It Is the hope of En
gineer No wo! I that the lands will be
signed up as soon as possible, so that
work can be commenced in the near
future.
Site for Exchange. The Automatic
Telephone Company has purchased prop
erty at the southwest corner of Burnslde
and West Park streets for the erection
of a building to cover 115x100 feot The
structuro will be of brick, three stories
high. It will be fireproof and will cost
in the neighborhood of $7,D. It is said
that the switchboards alone will cost
about $200,000. So far about 5000 residents
have subscribed for the now phones
Blood Poiwjnino Fatal. Mrs. Eliza
beth Fleishman Aschhelm. of San Fran
cisco, wife of L J. Aschhelm, secretary
of the B'nai E'rith district grand lodge
In rhat city, and who has been well
known all over the country for her work
in X-ray demonstration, passed away on
Thursday evening from an operation
which was necessitated through poisoning
of her arms in connection with her" X-ray
work.
Kansas Editors Coming. Members of
the Kansas Editorial Association and
members of their families to the number
of 125 will arrive- In Portland Monday
evening. Advertising Agent Hall, of the
O. R. & N., will meet the party at Hunt
ington and escort them across the state
on a special train. At The Dalles they
will leave the train to make the trip
down the Columbia by steamer.
Dr. Sheldon Will Not Preach at
the Exposition. Dr. C. M. Sheldon, the
distinguished author and preacher, will
preach at the First Presbyterian Church
tomorrow morning at 10:30 A. M., Instead
of at the Exposition in the afternoon.
Mr. Harold V. Milllgan will- give a short
organ recital in the evening and the pas
tor. Rev. Edgar P. Hill, D. D., will
preach.
August Erickson Arrested. August
Erlckson was arrested by Policeman Gal
braith last night for permitting a concert
in his saloon at Second and Burnslde
streets. The prisoner deposited 5100 cash
ball, and was released. He will appear
before Municipal Judge Cameron today.
He proposos to test the ordinance prohib
iting concerts in saloons.
Street-Grading Permit. The Inde
pendent Gas Company has been granted a
permit by the City Engineer for the Im
provement of Hawthorne street between
the south line of Belmont street at a
point 10) feet south thereof by grading
100 feet to the established grade.
Opium Den Raided. Sergeant of Police
Hogeboom last night raided an opium
den at 185 Second street and arrested the
proprietor. Ah Ylm. and Jim Tuley, a
white man. This is the third time Tuley
has been caught In a den within the past
few weeks.

Chicago Man Missing. C. C. Edwards,
of Chicago, here to visit the Fair, was
reported to Captain of Police Moore last
night as missing since early morning. His
wife fears foul play, and requested that
the city be searched. She said her hus
band wore valuable diamonds and had
some money when he left home, and she
fears he may have been robbed.

Rev. H. L. Pratt presiding elder United
Evangelical Church, Portland district
living on the East Side, Is taking a vaca
tion In the Willamette Valley.
Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Petre and Mrs.
George McGreen. of Iowa, and Arthur
Overn, of Biumcs, Mont,, arc the guests
of A. S. Douglas, of the Peninsula.
Andrew Jensen, a tobacco manufacturer
from the East, as the guest of Rev. Mr.
Hagoes. on East Tenth and Grant streets.
He comes to see the Exposition and the
country.
Mrs. Elizabeth Perry, a pioneer of Yam
bill and Columbia Counties, is a guest of
her daughter, Mrs. Brouse, at University
Park. Mrs. Perry came to Oregon in
1S45, settling first In Yamhill, and then in
14S moved to Columbia County. Although
78 years old, Mrs. Perry is In good health,
and enjoys seeing the Exposition with
the enthusiasm of youth.
Charles E. Moody, general manager of
the United States Improvement & Invest
ment Company, of San Francisco, is vis
iting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
E. Brown, on Washington street Mr.
Moody Is interested in a plan now being
promoted in San Francisco to move
Chinatown to the shore of the bay in
South San Francisco, and renovate the
place now .occupied In the central part
of the city, making it one of the principal
business centers.
