HELPS FIGHT FIRE
Councilman Rushlight Discov
ers a Blaze.
FIREBUG IS SUSPECTEDi
Grocery Store on East Side Is Vis
ited the Second Time by
Flames Damage Is Tif
teen Hundred Dollars.
Councilman A. G. Rushlight, of the Sev
enth Ward, distinguished himself at 10
o'clock last night "by discovering fire In
the rear of the grocery store of Griffith
& Bellamy, Grand and Hawthorne ave
nues, turning in an alarm and then se
curing a Babcock extinguisher, which
he used with good effect until the arrival
of the firemen.
The fire was of Incendiary origin, it is
thought by the police and the proprietors
of the store. It started in the yard back
of the store, in a shed used for the stor
age of coal oil. The damage to building
and stock will aggregate about $1500. In
surance fully covers it. This is the sec
ond fire of strange origin to occur in the
same place within 18 months.
While the fire raged, it was intensely
hot, and because of the oil that fed the
flames the firemen had hard work to ex
tinguish the blaze. Much chemical and
water were used before the recall sound
ed. Good work by the firemen saved a
portion of the grocery store, some stock
and many neighboring buildings.
Councilman Rushlight discovered the
firo at 10 o'clock. He turned in an alarm
without delay, calling the fire department
to the scene, but he did not quit at that.
He hurried to a lodging-house, secured a
Babcock fire-extinguisher and returned to
the store. With well-directed efforts, he
managed to keep down the blaze for a
time, thereby saving much property and
checking the flames until the arrival of
the firemen.
Policeman Stuart reached the scene im
mediately after the fire broke out. Ho
made an investigation, but was unable
to learn anything that would throw light
upon the identity of the person or per
sons who iset the fire. That it was set, he
says, there is but little doubt.
The store Is situated on the northeast
corner of Grand and Hawthorne avenues,
and hundreds pass it dally. ' It is the
theory of W. R, Griffith, one of the part
ners, that a careless man or an enemy
set the fire. He believes ft probable that
some one threw a lighted cigar into the
shed, while passing the building. When
the fire of about 18 months ago occurred,
the same theory was set forth. At that
time much greater damage was done.
There was a rooming-house above then.
It was consumed, and several small build
ings near were destroyed.
AUTO RUNS DOWN TWO MEN
Clrvlce Brothers Have Harrow Es
cape on Burnslde Bridge.
J. P. and William Cirvice, connected
with the hlacksmith shop at 428 East
Burnslde street, were run down by a big
automobile truck on the Burnslde bridge
yesterday and narrowly escaped being
killed. Both were considerably hrulsed.
The bridge was crowded at the time
with streetcars and vehicles of all sorts.
The two "brothers were in a one-horse
oart and were crossing to the East Side.
The auto-truck was following them, most
of the way at a distance of about 20 feet.
As a streetcar came along on one side of
the bridge, the automobile made a sud
den dash forward, striking the light cart
from behind and upsetting it. The two
men were thrown to the floor of the
"bridge with much force, and the truck
continued toward the two prostrate men,
and the man in charge only stopped when
the men screamed. Cirvice, the elder of
the two, was badly bruised on his leg,
while his brother was only slightly in
jured. They did not get the number on
the truck. It -was heavily loaded at the
time with flower pots. Bystanders gen
erally censure the man in charge of the
truck.
A STUDY OF FACES.
A study of faces baby faces is always
interesting. In looking at the portraits
in the Mellln's Food Exhibit, one lady
said, "That child ought to be a minister"
of the next one she said, "He's a rogue,
gee that twinkle in his eye," and still
further along she said, "What a sweet
face that little girl has," and so on. You
can spend a pleasant half-hour in the
Mellin's Food booth at the Lewis and
Clark Exposition, Agricultural Bldg.
