Twelve-Mile roadhouse at Terry, on -ho
Base Line road, was destroyed by flro
yesterday mornlnp between 12 and 1
o'clock, and the Are is supposed to have
been, the work of an Incendiary. It was
occupied by the proprietor, A. J. Sillier,
his wife and two others at the time the
Are occurred, and they-had barely time to
escape from the building with their
clothes and their lives, so rapidly did the
flames spread. It was a one and one-halt
story building, and has for a number of
years been a popular resort of wheelmen
and more recently for automobllists from
the city. The loss will probably be about
52000. and there was $500 insurance. Mr.
Miller is quite sure that the building wan
set on Are, and says when he left the
burning structure the odor of oil was very
pronounced, and he found a gunny sack
saturated with coal oil.

Cases.
PRESS OF WORK REASON
Judge Dc Haven Returns to San.

Federal Grand Jury Will
Be Ready August 23.
Judge William H. Hunt, of the Federal
Court for the District of Montana, will
reach Portland August 2S to take up the
land-fraud trials where they will be re
llnqulsho'd by Judge J. J. De Haven, who
will leave Portland on Saturday for San
Francisco and remain there engaged with
the business that has arisen In his dis
trict A recess of the Oregon District
Court will then be taken from tho con
clusion of the final details incident to the
closing of the second trial of Williamson,
Gesaer and Biggs, until August 28. Uni
ted States District Attorney Honey will
leave for San Francisco tonlghtj to be
gone for a couple of weeks, and upon his
return a Federal grand Jury will be
called to probe further Into the irregu
larities of the land entries of the state
and the many and various abuses grow
ing out of the nonobservance of the law.
Must Go to San Francisco.
Judge De Haven has found that it will
be necessary for him to go to San Fran
cisco at once to attend to business which
has arisen in his court In that city. At
first it was thought that another Judge
could be shifted to that district, and
Judge Dc Haven could finish tho duty
undertaken by him of hearing to the end
the land cases now pending. This was
found not to be possible, however, by
Judge Gilbert, of the Circuit Court and
after some negotiations Judge Hunt has
been assigned to tho Portland court for
the remainder of the land cases. Judge
De Haven will leave Portland on Satur
day, and will not return to the city.
When he leaves, --or before, he will ad
journ the District1 Court until August 28.
and upon that day Judge Hunt will tako
up the burden laid down by the Jurist
from San Francisco.
Engaged In, Cobban Case.
Judge Hunt is now engaged in trying
the Cobban case Jn .Montana, a case in
which R. M. Cobban is accused' of sub
ornation of perjuy'in regard to Inducing
many -land entries to be made in West
ern Montana. The case is similar to the
WIHIanison-Gesner-BJggs case, which has
Just been concluded.
United States District Attorney Heney
will leave this evening for San Francisco,
where he. will attend to private business
that has accumulated In his office, and.
if it is possible, take as much rest as can
be sandwiched In with the work that has
to be done.
Mr. Honey's rest and vacation from his
duties In Oregon will be of short dura
tion, howexer. as he will be in Portland
again before the bpening of court on Au.
gust 23. and will at once ask that a grand
Jury, be summoned for the investigation
of all those cases which bad to be
dropped on account of th passing of the
last grand Jury from existence. There
are many frauds to be probed, some of
which, it is understood, have been par
tially investigated, which will come un
der the eye of the District Attorney and
the grand Jury that is to be summoned.
Some of the cases would expire on ac
count of the statute of limitation, if the
Jury were not to begin work previous to
the latter part of August Others of
more recent date, as to the time of com
mission, have been discovered since the
close of the last grand Jury's work, and
are ready for the probe of the Govern
ment. Startling Disclosures Intimated.
It is intimated that certain questions
arising from the recent trials in the Fed
eral Court will be gone Into, perhaps with
startling disclosures. How long the Jury
will be in sossion. or what will be the
result. Is a matter of supposition. Mr.
Henoy has not as yet decided upon the
exact date for calling the Jury, other
than to say that he will bring It together
prior to me convention oi court on Au
gust 2S.
After the close of the final details of
the Williamson case no business will be
transacted In the Federal Court, and a
rest will be given the officials until the
latter part of the month, when from all
indication; things as strange and start
ling as any that have happened hereto
fore will be brought to the notice of the
public through the workings of the De
partment of Justice of the United States.
