FOR MISSOURI DAY AT FAIR ANYTHING "BUT A REPUBLIC Washington, Fifth and Sixth Street WELCOME, VISITORS Washington, Fifth and Sixth Streets WELCOME, VISITORS Governor Folk and His Staff Spend Day Preparing. to. DnzjIcEyes at Portland and the . Exposition. S37. LOUIS, Aug. 2. (Speclal.)-Governor Folk's military staff, met at .the Planters today and spent most of the day In the hands of the tailors. Altogether there were -16 Generals and .Colonels on hand. Resplendont In new uniforms, the staff will accompany the -Governor to the Port land Exposition to celebrate Missouri day, -September 10. This was voted on after the staff had been measured over and over again by the tailors. The mem bers who attended were: , General James A. De Armond, Butler; General Emmett Newton, Springfield; General- George S. McGrew, St. Louis; General Henry P. Lay, Warsaw: General Henry Lee, Columbia; General Frank J. Lutz. St. Louis; Colonel Virgil V. Huff, Marshall: Colonel Richard J- Balch, Monett; Colonel George W. Frazlor. Pat tonsburg: Colonel Ellis H. McHenry, Stan berry: Colonel James N. Jennings, St. Louis. General McGrew was chairman of the meeting which decided on the trip to Portland. General Emmett Newton will arrange the further details. It was his strategy that brought about the meeting today in order to circumvent any repeu tition of a mistake made -by Governor Dookery's staff when it was organized four years ago. At that time the mem bers had their uniforms made by differ ent tailors all over the state. "When they came together for the first time, the humiliating discovery Was made that there were as many different shades of blue in the uniforms as there were offl cers. Some wore very dark and some very light. The variety was wonderful to bdhold. Likewise, the gold lace had different degrees of splendor. Said Gen eral Newton: "I don't propose to have the staff show up in a strange state with uniforms rang ing from Western Union lo Posta:. Therefore the staff has one tailor wno guarantees the color." This ship chan nel, which Is . connecting Unit between i Lake Superior and the lower- lakes, was transferred to the Government In . 1S70. ' Since the Government -took charge, of the waterway, vast Improvements have been "undertaken, the canal having "been widened and deepened several times. It Is now considered the busiest -of the world's artificial waterways. In 180S, the lock erected by this state was destroyed by excavations for the present Poe lock, which Is the largest in the world. It is SOO feot long and 100 feet -wide, with a water depth of 22 feet on the sills. The Weitzel, lock, which was made nec essary by the Increased traffic, and Is still in operation, Is 515 feet long. T,he .traffic by way of the Soo Canal, both American and Canadian, during 1S04 was S2.000.000 net tons, 27,000,000 of which were through the : American canal. The traffic of the Suz Canal in 1KM was 22, 000.000 .net tons. This represented a large part of the commerce of . Europe, Asia and some of that be'ween the United States and Asia.' The iao Canal has de veloped the vast mineral wealth of the Lake Superior Teglon, and has furnished a ,cSheap and convenient outlet for the transportation of grain, flour and other 'products to the East and to Europe. It has helped to bdild up great Industrial Reenters at Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo, Jias aided In making Pittsburg the great- fcst Iron and steel center in the world and ihas contributed materially towards giv ing the United States primacy in the pro duction of. iron, steel and copper, i Another lock must be built and the ship canal above the locks must be wid ened because of the great det'elopment of the ore and grain traffic of the North west.
