10 THE 3IOByiN'& OREGpSOAX, MONDAY, JULY 31, 1905. BEING II CENSUS TAKER DOINGS OP MASSACHUSETTS' SPECIAIi AGENT. The Mast Intelligent Man Encoun tered Was a Rumsellcr With Opin ions About Church Deacons. Boston TfanscripL As & special agent of the State Bureau of Statistics, some of my experiences have been interesting, many amusing and some decidedly irritating. My labors were in the department of trade. "When I had to "shake the big stick" as a last resort, I tried to do it calmly as Instructed to do, with recalcitrants. I had a certain sym pathy with those who felt that the state was a sort of Paul Pry, when it insisted on knowing the most carefully concealed particulars of a business. Yet at least half of those I questioned gave the in formation readily and cheerfully, and de tails were often volunteered which were not desired. The most tiresome class was that which required long explanations as to utility of statistics. "What's the use of it all anyhow?" was a common question. An other troublesome class was the suspi cious one, which took me for an assessor of taxes, or a mercantile agency man, or some sort of a detective. One man al lowed me nearly to plunge Into his cellar through an open trapdoor, which I didn't notice until I had one foot over the yawn ing hole a merited fate, perhaps he thought it, for a census taker. A strenu ous Italian woman with the vaguest ideas of the institutions of a government of the people and by the people, and who was the proprietor of a small fruit store, was my first difficult customer. She fixed me with a fierce and glaring eye I saw the blood in it, when I attempted to explain the object of my call. It seemed that months before an urchin had attempted to purloin a box of candy from her place. He was caught in the act and handed over to the law. She gave her evidence against him. Her candy, however, was eaten before her eyes by the grinning police at the station. There upon she forgave the thief, but national, state, municipal, as well as legal official dom, from that moment, it was evident, had become objects of her contempt and distrust. I saw plainly that in -her eight I was the corrupt embodiment of an op pressive government. She declared that she would have nothing to do with me. I gently intimated the legal penalty for refusal. "You would not dare to touch a woman," she answered, furiously. She seemed to fancy that I was proposing to arrest her on the spot; but she calmed down finally, after I had offered my sym pathy in regard to the stolen candy, and I left in triumph with the needed report. The Poles are amusing. They are good natured and not very suspicious, but It was hard to make them understand. There was a simplicity, and an apparent straightforwardness about them, perhaps rather characteristic of the North Euro peans. I said to one: "You don't like the Russians much?" " I hate them," he answered, with brief and quiet bitter ness. That smart, knowing air. which is such valuable capital as displayed in the bearing of New Englanders by birth or adoption, was quite lacking in the Poles I met I found Its absence decided-. ly refreshing as a contrast to the general pose of "smartness" of those I met and talked with of other nationalities, al though it was so hard to make these Poles understand me. The evasive people were also trying the ones I had to call on. over and over again, who were always too busy Just then." but who to all appearances were simply waiting for customers. However, they all became convinced that they couldn't tire me out, and probably be came tired themselves at last of seeing my head appear with clocklikc regularity in their doorways. So at last they ah complied with various degrees of resig nation shown In their faces. An Intelligent Hebrew, with a lean pock etbook as he alleged, the result .somehow of cheap prison labor competition, uttered an eloquent jeremiad on the injustice of that sort of thing to manufacturers gen erally, as well as to operatives. Other small tradespeople complained of the department stores and of the branches everywhere, of the great central concerns in the heart of the city, and of the deca dence In their business. In many places the only customers seemed to be small children. Some, who owned their little shops under the houses they lived in, told me that if they had to pay rent they could not exist by means of their busi ness. A Junk dealer who wanted Congress to enact a prohibitive tariff on immi grants remarked that a street parade In Boston of licensed old-bottle-and-rag-men would have 1300 men In the ranks. Yet It seemed likely that his parents had come to this country in an emigrant vessel. At one place I came in contact with a de lightfully obstinate old lady who almost made me blush by her allusion to the na ture of her ailments. Some denounced the census as a hum bug, designed to give jobs to loafers, fa-s-orItes and hoodlums, at the expense of the taxpayers: but it isn't worth while to say much about them. They all gave the desired Information in the end. In my poor opinion the most intelligent, the beet bred and the most cultured man I ran across during my census duties was a liquor seller that is. he sold the stuff in bottles. In connection with an elegant little grocery store in ,a precinct where not an open bar was to be found. So far from being reticent about his business, ho fairly overwhelmed me with "unneces sary details. How we got -to discussing Balzac in the midst of questions as to amount of capital invested, weekly sales and the like. I can't for the life of me remember now. but so it was. The railroad station from which he started every morning for the South sta tion was hard by. and he told me with a merry eye how he met there his Satur day night customers deacons and other church members. They were nervous, but friendly, when they skipped in, and supped out of his store with his bottled goods carefully concealed In their Inside pockets on Saturday nights, but Monday morning he found he was invisible to them. When they -passed him they always looked at the clock. DOGS BEAR PROUD NAME Towser and Fido Give Way to Kaiser, King:, Etc Exchange. According to official records preserved In the office of City Tax and License Collector Johnson, Los Angeles, Cal., the styles In dogs' names have undergone a startling change within the last few years. Half a decado ago fully half the dogs In the city answered to the familiar cognomens of Carlo. Duke. Towser, Sport, Gyp, Rex; Rover, Brownie, Bruno. Dandy. Prince. Jack or Spot. Today, with only two exceptions, these names have dis appeared, and in their place has sprung up an aristocratic set of names, proudly bestowed upon aristocratic doggies, many of whom are worth more in dollars and cents than the per capita circulation, as set forth in the Government's financial reports. . Los Angeles dogs bear such titles as Kaiser, King, Major, Colonel. Czar, Com modore and President. Punning names are frequent. In fact, comic cognomens are the rule rather than the exception. Some of them are new and some fxe old. but the dog doesn't mind, and if his owner is satisfied who is to complain? The President's popularity is attested by the fact that out of an even 1400 dogs licensed since June 1. no fewer than 76 are named Teddy, while one wags his diminutive tail when addressed as Theo dore Roosevelt. Other prominent men have been slral- A Genuine Sale OF Will be, inaugurated this morning to be con tinued during the week. The Emperor of Germany, whom Poult ncy Bigelow declares to resemble the President In many respects. Is recognized by six dog-owners, who have named their canines Kaiser. One .animal is licensed under the Imposing cognomen of Com modore Slgsbee. another is known as Baden-Powell, and still another, perhaps in wearied appreciation of the old Greek campaigner, whose parasang marches are crammed into the schoolboy noodle, bears the name of Xenophon. The Japanese army has not been for gotten, and Xogl appears on the records, the same page announcing the issuance of a license to Czar. One dog Is named Schley for the hero of Santiago, another Dewey, and yet another Farragut. There are three Snyders and two Schneiders, the former named perhaps In honor of the former Mayor, and the latter In mem ory of Rip Van Winkle's lamented cur. Two other local men are honored. One dog. appropriately enough a pug. and a champion In his class, bears the name of Jeffries, while a busy little fox terrier has been called Corney. In recognition of a local politician and because, as his owner explained, his bark is worse than his bite. Among the dog humorists are Puck. Punch and Judge. Then there are also the puzzling sobriquets Uno, Ino and Guess, which enable the dogs' owners to raise a laugh against the man who asks the pup's name and misunderstands the tenor of the reply. One Tiunster, who de clares his dog is a willing brute, has named him Barkis, with the accent care fully placed on the 'first syllable. Though he halls from tho frozen north an Eskimo dog now In the city is re ported to have a loving and warm dis position as Indicated by his name of Don Juan. Not far away lives a fox terrier known as Flirt, while the city records show no fewer than 21 Tootsies. A mas tiff, about the size of an overgrown calf, is named .Midget, while Jumbo is a toy dog from Chihuahua.
