12' the raroosg oaiGomy, frip,ay, jtjlt 28, 1905. wets in church Hiss Brewster's Demonstra tion at Unitarian ChaDel. LtClUKtS ANU rl I o ALoU Tells Women "With Gray Hairs That They Are Young "When They " Wear Her Model, and Asks for Volunteers. Corsets, and how to wear the kind that TOake you young, was the subject of a discourse delivered in the chapel of the -Unitarian Church at Seventh and TamhiH streets, yesterday afternoon, by Miss Brewster, the fashionable reprcsentave of a modiste establishment. Miss Brew ster spoko as If looking young were very much the same thing as being young, and she ought to know. "When you arc' dealing with the Ideal woman." said Miss Brewster, with great precision and a movement of her hands that indicated long practice at smoothing down curves which were naturally a little bumpy, "to arrive at an understanding of her mentally, morally, physically or spir itually, you must first have her in a perfect-fitting corset." A. new departure in corsets is offered by Miss Brewster, one that Is built solid in the back, with the laces down the front. She explains that this is better because the shape of the back can be made to conform to the most stylish pattern and be kept that way, and it does away with steels down the front that dig into the vitals. Moreover, the time-honored and distressing necessity of tying the strings to the bedpost is forsaken .forever. "When Miss Brewster had finished her stylish lecture she asked for volunteers to try on her superior brand of corsets. None at first responded, so she spoke up again in her sprightly manner: "Is there no lady who loves herself enough to come up and be fitted? I'd just love to do it' Silence lasted a moment, and then a woman past middle age, with her manner more constrained than her figure, walked up the chapel aisle. ' Miss Brewster received her graciously, and then, putting her hands to the em barrassed lady's waist line, pouted dread fully and said: "Horrors! Such awful corsets! "Why. you have the figure of a girl. If you only knew it." So she drew out a pair of corsets de signed for fleshy ladles she only has three kinds, for thin, medium and fleshy ladles and fitted it over the woman's dress, only moderately to her discomfort. "Now, there you arc. Turn your back to the audience. Would not you think." smiling engagingly on her auditors, "would not you think that she were a girl of 16, If It were not for her gray hairs? And she is a mother and possibly a grand mother! You can all do the same. You can all be young. If you only wear the right kind of corset." A very thin lady coming next. Miss Brewster brought out the model of cor set for slight figures. It helped out the lady's figure more than she herself thought justified. So she spoke up: "Is there only this model?" "Oh, that's all that's necessary," she answered. "But if it does not fit exactly?" 3Ilss Brewster Explains. "Oh, that can bo easily arranged. All figures do not develop perfectly, but with this kind of corset It does not make any difference. By the use of horsehair and silence cloth between that and the figure this dffliculty will not last long." As the various volunteer models, even those naturally endowed with only indif ferent figures, suddenly blossomed into su perbly graceful creatures, became young, as Miss Brewster styled it, the audience began to fidget, and half the women there went forward, examining the material of the corsets, which is the kind that will hold the shape best." s One woman, wife of a prominent law yer, examined one that fitted her very well, to her notion, and inquired the price. "Eighteen dollars." responded Miss Brewster, with the coolness o a Chicago hotel clerk when he is charging four times the real price for a room. The woman thought better about buy lng, and said she would like to have her husband see It first. T will gladly show him," said Miss Brewster, "if you will bring him. around to my apartments in my hotel. Telephone first, so I -can receive you alone. "You know," said Miss Brewster, with a deprecating wave of the hand, "Men ar interested in everything pertaining to women, what they wear and how they jqok. in meir cioines. so ji course mcy are very particular about their wives cor sets. They like to have their wives young, JCow if some of you ladles) wish to bring your husbands at one time to my apart ments. I will give them a lecture on the scientific wearing of corsets." Miss Brewster will give another per formance next Tuesday morning. Forest Fires Beyond Control. MOSCOW, Idaho. July 27. The forest fires which have been raging on the forks of the Clearwater River, destroying vast tracts of timber, have got beyond control of the force of men that has been fighting them, and unless more men are sent, it Is declared the fight will be useless. State Land Commissioner Hun son has left Moscow with 20 men. and the Clearwater Lumber Company has also rent out a large force. The law forbids the State Board to send out more than six men at a time to fight forest fires, but In this emergency it was decided to over ride the law. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL, RETORT.
