12 THE ' HORNING OREGOKIAy, WEDX3ESDAX, JULY 26, 1905. 11 WUTHER s Within Twenty -Four Hours Cooler Days Are Predicted. WHAT THE RECORDS SHOW Only Twice in the Past Thirty-Three Years Has the Hot Weather Lasted for So Long a Time. Based on the observations of the United States Weather Bureau, the warm spell that has hit Portland for the last eight days and caused the principal topic of conversation to be on the weather, will rot continue for more than 24 hours longer. Port landers may congratulate themselves on what it is, and think what It might have been- The warmest day In the thirty-three years' existence' of the weither bureau was In 1891, when the thermometer registered 102 degrees. The nig'nest temperature registered this year was 99 degrees, July 8, three degrees lower than the record-breaker, and one degree lower than July 25 last year, when the mercury registered 100 decrees. From July 8 of the present year until July IS the heat was felt but little. Since that time Portland has experi enced one of the longest periods of warm weather In Its history. Begin ning with July 18 the maximum tem peratures up to last night were as fol lows: Degrees 85, 89. S3, 89, 91, 91. 86, 87. Only two similar periods ex ten Jing for so many days are on rec ord. The first was In 1875, when warm weather, continued for eight days, and the second in 1882, when the longest period covered nine days. Last year the warm spell continued, only four days, when cooling showers began. The normal temperature is expected to go but little above that of last year, when the average was 67 degrees. For August the mean temperature Is slightly below that of July, but show ers are more frequent. Minimum temperatures during tho present warm weather range from CO to 70 degrees, occurring about 4 a. m. Maximum temperatures are recorded between 4 and 5 p. m. The humidity at Portland for the last eight days has been between 30 and 46 per cent. Although existing temperatures are predicted for the next twenty-four hours, if former years be a criterion a cool spell may bo expected shortly. Clouds will "be a forerunner to lower temperature, fol lbtved by showers. Tells of Spokane's Prosperity. Spokane was well represented here yes terday In the person of Colonel JC. E. Llnsley. capitalist, mining magnate nnd member of the last Washington Legisla ture. Colonel Llnsley says that this Summer is witnessing unprecedented activity in the Spokane mining field. "There la less vocal mining In our dis trict now than ever before," said the Colonel last night, . coining the phrase without a struggle, "but real, actual mining operations are going on splendidly. "WhJJe Spokane depends to a consider able extent on mining, much of Its pros perity comes from the farmers who are enjoying wonderful prosperity this year. Eastern Washington will produce 30,000,000 bushels of wheat, and the price prom ises to be good." Colonel Llnsley will spend the rest of the week here seeing the Fair, of which he speaks enthusiastically. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL RETORT. PORTLAND. July 25. Maximum tempera ture. 87 deg.; minimum, SR.
