DISGRACE WITH DIVORCE
"WIFE OP CLEM BIEKER SEEKS
ZjEGAIi SEPARATION'.
Brutal Husband Given Ten Lashes,
1cctnre Prom Court and Served
With Complaint. .
Clem Bleker. a blacksmith employed In
the Southern Pacific car shops, received
10 lashes on his 'bare back In the County
Jail yesterday for wife-beating, and as
soon as the .-whipping was over he was
handed a complaint In a divorce suit
which Mrs?. Bleker filed in the State Cir
cuit Court yesterday afternoon. Mrs.
Bleker asks for the custody of the chil
dren, seven in number, and for $40 per
month alimony.
Bleker plead guilty before Judge Fraier
yesterday, morning. His wife and neigh
bor were called as witnesses to relate
the facts. The evidence showed that
Bleker earns $2.50 a day, paid the monthly
grocery and meat bill and squandered the
rest for liquor. "When he had no money
he demanded it from his wife, who took
In washing to help pay the family ex
penses. She refused to give him 50 cents
and he struck her twice, blacking her
eyes. She said he had beaten her before.
Bleker acknowledged striking her, but
denied the previous beatings. He plead
drunkenness as an excuse.
"Drunkenness Is no excuse," said Judge
Frarer in passing sentence. "This law
has been termed brutal, but your treat
ment of your wife was worse. Think of
a man knocking his wife down because
she refused to give him 50 cents for
whisky. Think of the children your wife
has had to support by her labor over the
washboard while you have been spend
ing ybur earnings at the bar. You ought
to be ashamed of yourself."

Big Saving to the State.
Or.TSf.PIA. Wash.. July 19. (Special.)
Governor Mead issued a statement today
showing that the new law regarding the
transportation of the state's charges to
ihe penal and reformatory institutions
and to the insane asylums, has saved to
the state already J2231.CS. It cost the state
that xnuqh less for the transportation of
-hese persons during the months of April,
May and June. 1903, than it did lor trans
porting fewer persons for tho three
months named in 1904.
Under the old system prisoners, incor
rlgibles and Insane persons were trans
ported to the state Institutions by
Sheriffs or their deputies, who were al
lowed trawling expenses. Under the new
law employes of the institutions convey
he Inmates to the institution. It is esti
mated that 418.000 will be saved In the
present biennial period.
When weak, weary and worn out. Hood's
Sarsaparllla is just the medicine to restore
strength. -
